IF you really think the 340 ONLY had 275 HP then you need to smoke some diff chit man!! cuz yer brain is all messed up. I wish I knew just what they did have for HP cuz they sure had a hell of a lot more than 275HP!!!

He claims the motor is not big enough... bla bla... yes he's a chevy guy.

340 Dusters put down more Chevy's big or small block. Ask anyone who had on back in the day. I had a 71 340 4 speed Duster. Still breaking into the 13's with 100K on the clock. The only Chevy to beat it was a small block Vega, but of course the Vega motor didn't last a year. If he is looking at Horsepower numbers tell him to look at NHRA numbers where they factored 340's way up and 350's way down.

as probably already stated HERE the factory didn't always tell the truth when it came to hp ratings!!!!! by end of 60's insurance co. and gov't were getting ready to do their best to kill the high performance car. don't trust me, study the history of it all. 340 was vastly underrated. NRHA used their rating system to help/hurt their choosen also ?????

given enough money and technology now days, anyone can make most any engine run like heck. if we are mopar enthusiasts and have the 340 for an engine to work with, then we are lucky I say. if you study what Ma mopare was preparing to do ( and just started) doing with the 360 before ho got killed off, that is interesting also... just my 2 cents..

I have always considered stripped down A bodies with a 340 a muscle car. Hell, I guess by definition the Scat Pack Darts are not to be considered a muscle car? Why label it as a scat pack?

TO: oldmopar dude. i allso bought a NEW 66 dodge charger. it is not and was not any thing close to a luxury car. it was a great high performance car. and great chick magnet.

Best 340: the 290HP Six Pack. (Note the 1967-69 Z/28's 302 matched that.) Best muscle-era Chevy 350: the 370HP 1970 Corvette LT-1. (The identical engine was rted at 360HP in Z28's.)

I would not believe Chevrolet rated HP numbers. Look at NHRA numbers.

One of the Mopar magazines rebuilt an early 340 to stock specs with the stock 485 or 535 cfm carter carb and it dynode 281hp.There is a lot more to racing than a hp number.

I would not believe Chevrolet rated HP numbers. Look at NHRA numbers.

The NHRA constantly adjusts it's numbers based upon results. As an example: If someone is running stock class with a certain model such as a 340 Duster a second faster than the equivalent 340 Dart, - the Dusters will be reclassified.

The guys that run stock class squeeze a lot more power from their cars than 'true' stock vehicles came from the factory with. Although NHRA classification may not give an accurate set of comparable numbers between cars it's still a better comparison than the numbers reported by the manufacturers.

The NHRA is an adjusted HP factor.

But their re-factored numbers do compute damn close.

* 1970 ~ 340/275 HP ....... 299 HP ~ {w/Carter AVS 630 CFM}
* 1971 ~ 340/275 HP ....... 314 HP ~ {w/Carter Thermoquad 750+ CFM}

* 1969 ~ 302/290 HP Camaro 'Z-28' ....... 309 HP
* 1970 ~ Corvette 350/370 HP 'LT-1' ...... 330 HP

A quote from Road Test Magazine, June 1967..........works for me.

"Just what is a Muscle Car? Exactly what the name implies. It is a product of the American car industry adhering to the hot rodder's philosophy of taking a small car and putting a BIG engine in it. To balance this out, handling, braking and related essentials are modified to result in a performance machine for the streets. They tack racy names to the car: GTA, GTO, GTX, or just plain GT; R/T, SST, SS, GS or, for the lack of better initials, 4-4-2. They doll the car up with fancy trimmings and put it up for sale. And it sells like crazy"

Next up.
Define : "Economy Car" and "Luxury Car".
Maybe those will be easier.

For me a luxury car used to be one that I didn't have to jump start, the heater & cigarette lighter worked, and you didn't need spinal realignment after driving.

An economy car was one that you could rest your chin on your knees as you drove. LOL!

Chose smarter friends......because you can't fix stupid.....jmo

I knew some "muscle car" owners that would probably argue that 340 a body cars were not "muscle cars", while they were looking at their tail lights.
