Edelbrock 600 carb issue?

-
Was able to acquire a known good loaner carb to swap out and see if that can either eliminate the carb as the problem or shift focus to the ignition. Will report results once installed and tested.

Well the loaner carb turned out to be a severe leaker once some gas got to it so it came right back off. Then just for sh*ts and giggles I put on a Holley 650 double pumper (with the choke milled off) that I had laying around and was able to get the car up and idling and actually driving. It's a 4777-3 square bore. Was hesitant to put this on since I've heard that you can't run a mechanical-secondary carb with an automatic. It idles a lot differently than the edelbrock and seems lean. If I put both hands over the air horn and choke it, it picks up rpms. It's jetted at 67 in the primaries and 73 in the secondaries with a 6.5 power valve. It also takes a minute to catch up when opening the throttle but it's definitely NOT the same issue I was having previously. Runs smooth at tip-in and light cruising, just likea to wait a second when you hit the gas. I suppose I need to do some accelerator pump tuning to get the shot just right, but overall the carfeels a lot snappier than it did with the edelbrock 1406, even with less throttle. I was thinking if I jet it up to 69's on the primary side would that help it transition better off-idle? Right now it idles around 1000rpm but it likes 3 1/2 turns out of the idle screws, which to me again says it's jetted too lean? Am I headed in the right direction here? The motor does have a bigger cam, 233* at .050, and about .512 lift. I've lost the cam card and I can't remember the LSA. Running a built A999 trans with a shift kit and 2.93 geared 8 3/4 with 245/60/14 rear tires (25.6" diameter). I know the gear is too tall but I feel that the deeper 1st of the A999 and short tires make up for that a bit....

Oh, and I am running a higher-stall converter, it was custom-built for my combo, believe its about a 2000rpm stall speed.

good luck with the Holley, I tried 2, one a 600, the other a 650, they both stumbled
coming off idle, even tried a 50cc accelerator pump upgrade, no go. Went back to
my 600 Edel and now running a 750 Edel. Too bad your not closer, not using the
600 Holley or 600 Edel and I rebuilt both of them so know they are good.

Will read the plugs when I get out of work today. Drove it in and jetted up to 69's on primary side on lunch, and it drove a little better!!!! Might go to 71 primary 73 secondary and see what that does. Right now the hesitation is minimized and idle is down to about 1000rpm and more stable.

Well I got it figured out. The other day I was attempting to tune this Holley some more and I finally noticed that the pass side primary booster wasn't spraying fuel when throttle was applied. So I took the bowl off and started cleaning every hole again with carb cleaner. While I had it apart I decided to go back to the baseline jetting and when I removed the jets I found it -- a big greasy wad of gunk right underneath/behind the jet. Don't know how I didn't see that before!!!! So I got it out, put everything back together and baselined, after after two tries and a couple pumps (remember, no choke horn!) it fired and ran. Some slight adjustment of idle speed and mixture and it was running as good as it ever has!!! All the issues I was having with the eddy carb are gone and it runs smoother and feels much peppier. No hesitations whatsoever, no bogging or chugging, just a nice smooth transition from idle all the way up to WOT, even when matting it. I might play with the jetting again, but for now I couldn't be happier.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and suggestions, I sure learned a lot trying to fix this issue!!
