Hey Guys

I have been looking into buying a set of Edelbrock heads for my 340 demon for some time now. I recently came across a machine shop that has a set of jheads in stock that has some work done to them.

i don't know to much about the engine as it is new to me but the engine is 1970 340, 750 holly dp, edelbrock ld340, and a set of full length heads not sure of brand.

I wanted edelbrock for the cool factor and the performance upgrade. but after find these heads im not sure what i should buy. The price is about the same.

This is the info on the Jhead from the shop Jheads fresh valve job, New 2.02/1.60 valves stainless(undercut) #3418915 E no springs, with seals/bronze liners and Serdi 4 angle valve job, surfaced ready to go $ 1500 pr

Can the seller of the J Heads provide you any flow numbers? I'm usually in favor of the newer technology as 40 year old cast iron heads never seem like the most effective use of my dollar(seriously, 40 years ago Jiffy Pop Popcorn was cutting edge!!), but if they flow better than OOTB Eddys (& I would say HAVE to flow significantly better, since they're SO much heavier) then maybe theyre worth your attention.

The Speedpro heads seem to me to be a cost effective option worth considering as well. Good luck with your decision.

J heads sound a bit over priced to me. 5-600 for unported fresh heads is the max I would go.

Going rate around me is $300 for a set of J-heads that need a refresher.

IMO, there is no way I would drop $1500 on a set of J heads. Unless the J's are heavily ported they won't even get close to the flow of the stock Edelbrocks....and the Eddy's have room to grow if you decide to port them for more power....AND the Eddy's will knock a bunch of weight off the front of the car (if I recall correctly they are either 40 or 80 lbs lighter than iron heads).

For what its worth, my car (the Barracuda in my sig) uses ported Edelbrocks with a small roller cam.

For 1500 with no springs... RUN FOREST RUN!!!

I'd buy RHS X heads or Ede's before dropping 1500 on factory J stuff. The RHS X head from IMM will perform better than an ede head.

Yeah that's what i thought. i sent the seller a question if he had any flow numbers on the heads or if any porting was done. I didn't know if this was a good deal or not because he has them listed on clearance on the website. I wasn't sure how much the machining would cost so i thought i would ask the board. Thanks again to everyone who posted.

Lol. I have $500 in my j heads. All new 2.02-1.88 valves. All machine work done including new springs locks retainers... And that price includes the purchase of the heads.

So $1500 for j isn't a good deal

I'll sell you my j heads for 1000 :). They have springs too. For that price range go with the eddies. They have a smaller cumbustion chamber. If you don't want to spend that money shop around for a good set of j heads.

Bare edelbrocks are only $590 each from amazon.

search "Edelbrock 60769"

I'll vote for the Eddies. Yes, the aluminum heads weigh less. But did you know that because of their superior heat dissipation qualities, it is possible to go up to 1.0 point higher on the compression ratio. e.g. Cast iron head, 93 octane pump gas 9.5:1 max compression ration before "pinging"; Aluminum head 83 octane pump gas 10.5:1 before "pinging".

Like everyone else, I think the J heads are way overpriced. Before I would even consider those J heads, I would buy a set of 308's off of a 89-91 360. Most people think the 308 heads from the factory flow better on the exhaust side than the J heads. With mild porting to the intake side and 2.02's installed, they will outflow stock J heads on the intake side as well. Best news is that a set of 308's are pretty easy to get, pretty cheap 100 bucks for the pair (hit the junkyards or CL, might get the whole motor for 250) and they already have the hardened seats for todays gasoline.

Depending on the work, the parts, and the flow testing - they could be worth all that. But - you're still looking at an open chamber head, that's a bit heavier, and has no sense of "bling". Not that I care about bling but you did mention it...lol. Depending on your use and expectations (I didn't read that anywhere) you might look into the EQ Magnum heads too. Much less money and may do what you want for 1/2 the cash.
