engine block number?

some kid in my class is selling a 318 and a 904 to me for $75 and I dunno what year the engine is, it's older than 1991 and the numbers he gave me were 3830941 and 0-36 4. if anyone could tell me where to find out how to desipher these numbers that would be great

If it is a 904 it's 88 back. Look at the side of the block for the casting date. The 3830941 is the 2 bbl intake manifold part number, it's from a 1975-1978 motor. Again, check the side of the block for the casting date.

There is a alpha/numeric string stamped into a pad just below the cylinder head that I think is more informative than just the casting number. It might looks something like this:

HM340P37820469

This decodes to a 1972, Mound Road Assembly Plant, 340 CID, Premium fuel, 3762 day of production (1972), # 469 constructed that day.

The range of production dates for 1972 was 3625-3990.
3762-3625= 137 day of the year. ~ May 15th

Find the number on your 318, post it here or PM me, I will decode it for you.

well the entire block is gunked up horribly due to he has 2 engines above it on shelves and oil ran everywhere. the numbers I could get is this
4006730-318-1

I have the same casting numbers on my manifold, block is stamped '74
by the look of it I would say its the manifold that came with the block originally.

I know this is an old thread but that casting number is used from 1975 thru 1984. The VIN off the black can get the original application and year of this 318 much closer. There would also be a date cast in to the block.

Yep, and the -1 means it's the first casting so i'd be leaning toward the 75' side.

Date cast into block is 10-22-74

Vin off the Black? do you mean back or block? Oh wait, partial vin's are stamped on the block as well right? Going to check that when I get home from work...
