Hi, I'm fairly new to the site. I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, but here goes. I want to put a fuel injected small block in my 70 Dart 2 door hardtop. I'm considering getting a 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum out of a late model truck as a good starting point so I'll have all the accessories, wiring, sheet metal, etc. I'll also be running a manual transmission...4 speed or possibly one of those aftermarket 5 speed trannys. I was wondering if I will have any problems with the PCM if I don't use the trans. that goes with those engines, or does the PCM even control the trans. on those vehicles. Is this a fairly straightforward swap or am I going to have major issues. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure about the PCM and tranny issue, but otherwise, it is straight foward and the computer just needs a hot wire with key on. I'm not sure if there self grounding, but a negitive wire is nothing to make and ground right.

If you can get/swap the PCM for a manual trans set up, it would be that much easier to do. Trade one in @ MoPar or purchase one out right.

I know this is not precisely the same as what they did over at Mopar Action ... but you might still find the articles in the series informational ... it's the series where they converted an early 60's car over to an EFI 360.

PCM does control Automatics, and will throw codes if all of the sensors from transmission and rear end are missing. Just putting a PCM for a manual transmission will not keep all the codes away. You would need to send it in to someone to get a custom flash to turn off what you do not need. You can get recommendations from dakota-durango.com on who is the best. I would get the PCM and engine from the same vehicle. Some of the different years computers will not communicate with another years sensors.

Example.. I had a 98 318 5 speed Dakota and swapped a rear end from a 99 Dakota R/T into it. Speed Sensor had to be replaced for the speedo to work.

I'm looking to get 450 HP out of the Magnum. Does anyone know if this is attainable from the Magnum (5.2) with F.I. and still have good street manners? I'm not totally against a carb. Am I wasting my time...should I just try to find an "LA" block and start from scratch? I'm just not very familiar with the differences in the "LA" engines and the Magnum engines. I figured it would be less of a hassle to just buy a complete setup pulled from a wrecked vehicle so I wouldn't have to go searching for all the little things...brackets, pulleys, wiring, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

450 is attainable with a 5.2L. I had a 98 Dakota 5 speed that put 422 to the ground. Mods were 52MM TB, Full Exhaust, M-1 Intake, KRC Perf. 210X Cam, 5angle valve job and 150 shot of nitrous.

Also, no reason why you can't carb a magnum motor. I recommed the Crosswinds Air Gap intake (you can use it on either a Magnum or LA). If you run an electric fuel pump, you don't have to change timing cover and buy a fuel pump eccentric button for the end of the cam so that will save some hassle.

I'm currently putting a 360 Magnum in my Scamp from a Dakota R/T.
I chose to run the serpentine belt set up, electric fuel pump. Only thing I had to change was oil pan & pick up to center sump and the intake. Makes it alot easier. No messing with changing entire water pump and the crank pulley to V Belt. Plus the alternator puts out alot more juice. One thing to note: there is a difference between a 360 & a 318 oil pan when you go to buy one.
