Finally got the 318 out of the 72 more door and stuck the 360 (1985 block) into the engine bay.

Used Schumacher mounts and the original transmission. Now, here's the rub. Using all the same pieces off my 318, I CANNOT get the fan/fan clutch into place....I need another inch between the water pump snout and the radiator.

How is this possible?

are the mounts on right?
and they are the right mounts?

still biscuit mounts, right?

1....Why would you use Schumaker mounts going 318--360???

2....What are you doing about the 318--360 balance change? 360 must have a proper 360 front dampener, AND THE PROPER WEIGHTED converter or an AFTERMARKET weighted flex plate

3....If you have the proper crossmember / mount that should "show you" the proper front/ rear engine / trans location. It should not have changed. The water pump shaft lengths should be the same.

Otherwise, as noted above, the proper engine brackets, in the proper place, proper sides

unless he flipped the transmission mount around

1 - The one side is different on the 360 vs the 318. They were even marked "L" and "R."
Have done it before without the "correct" engine bracket, decided to go easy this time, or so I thought.
2 - The front dampner is a NIB correct for the 360's year and automatic transmission. The flexplate is the B&M for a 360/904 without balance weights on the converter.
3 - I know. Hence, my confusion.

Kinda' hard to do. The mounts, literally, fell into place. No prying or cussing or weeping to get the engine into its home, the driveshaft is in the same spot, headers fit easily...however, can't get the fan in place.

IDK.

OP, just a thought: Is there a shroud there that you cannot get the fan and clutch past? If so, then loosen the shroud and pull up, put in the fan/clutch, and drop both shroud and fan/clutch in place and tighten them up.

I wonder if you had old sagging mounts before, which lowered the engine and let the fan/clutch come out past the shroud before, and now you have the engine sitting higher with new mounts, and that 'gap' under the top edge of the shroud has closed up.

Same timing cover and waterpump??

Same - same....new but same dimensions on the pump.

I wish it was that...the fan and clutch will not go into the space. There is a shroud, but I have it hanging on the pump and out of the way.

Beats me. I am about to throw a direct drive fan and spacer on it and start driving.

Certainly strange..... so something has obviously moved the engine/trans forward. Any way that the trans mount got put on backwards, like diymirage suggested? Just because the mounts all fell into place does not mean that its installed right.

what about this, remove the fan shroud all together (feel free to mail it to me, if you want to get rid of it)
i seem to remember you may need to place the fan in the shroud and lower both down together

Radiator mounted in the same location? Obviously something isn't the same.

Don't know if its even possible, but could the fan be on the wrong side of the clutch? Aluminum pump in place of an iron? Mounts on the wrong side of the block ears? Just tossing ideas out for ya:thumbsup:

Fan can only go on the back of the clutch

72 and 86 both have aluminum water pumps

So that leaves installing the mounts wrong

I guess what we need here, is for someone with a "late" SB installed in a 68-72, to take a measurement between front of cylinder head face to rad support, and shoot a couple of photos of the mounts

Coach, you still running the idler pulleys as well?

By the time i get home it will be dark, I'll slap some pics of my 71 up tomorrow

For what it's worth, I have 17 inches from the passenger side valve cover to the radiator support, and 6 inches from the alternator pulley to the radiator

R and L are from the driver's seat..... right?
Check the pumps again as to the heights of the drive flanges.

Did the trans linkages hook up OK?
You said the driveshaft fit, but is it all the way into the tail correctly?
Is the dipstick tube almost touching the firewall?
Was the accelerator cable long enough and not pulled nearly taut?
Did you have to rebend the trans cooler lines to fit?
Did the wiring harness fall into place?
