Eric's cam challenge

The 25 year old janitor at that.

and here's the part where that house of cards all falls down. DV tested over 19,000 cams he should have an innate advantage on that alone. he's done dyno testing, he knew the parameters, he writes the theory; advantage, advantage, advantage.
You would think so, didn't even seem like he used his 128 formula.
yet here we are.

it's like the janitor comes in and solves the unsolvable equation on the chalkboard that the PhD professor put up there.

Interesting but it just tells you what the cams did straight up in that specific build with that carb and tune. I’m not sure what the takeaway is if you’re building something different.

True, I don't think there's something from this you could easily just put into practice on next cam choice.

I would like to see all of them be able to tune for their given cams. That said, that won't make a difference from 20th to 1st place. He got his *** handed to him. On a platter.

Well, if DV's premise was, "I put a streetable cam in the middle of the pack of race cams"......He should've also submitted an all-race cam as well....only one more custom cam to grind..

But that was the whole point. The testing was to simulate what happens a good bit of time and that is get a cam, stick it in and go.

You’re old enough and been around enough to know that I’d say a majority of engine builds on this site not done by a shop (and some shops can’t degree a cam so there is that) get installed dot to dot.

I can’t believe it’s 2025 and guys still won’t spend the time and money to degree the cam. But it happens. A lot.

That was his whole point. I think he at least met expectations of how he set up the test. I’d say he worked his *** off and exceeded my expectations for sure.

That’s the beauty of dyno testing. You can set up about any testing you can think of. It’s not always about max power pulls (hang on…I have to throw up in my mouth a bit because that statement hurts) so you can test anything you think you want to learn.

I think it was @mbaird that put his engine on a dyno near him and they did very few power pulls. IIRC, and I tagged him so maybe he will see this and correct me if I’m wrong they spent most of the time doing part throttle work.

That dyno operator is rare. Most guys just start making power pulls. That’s ok but you can do more than that.

This is an example of setting up a test to see the results of just one change.
Yes… it was my engine . We did around 7 power pulls but spent quite a while doing low rpm/ part throttle tuning .
This guy was exceptional though… he had my engine for 3 days. Day 1 he hooked it up, Day 2 he broke it in and did some baseline tuning , day 3 we did part throttle and wide open runs for 6 hrs.
He charged me $650 if I recall .

The only thing I see he did wrong was not charge enough lol.

Hilarious, or click bait? Either way, he didn't do very well

I listened to some of it (on 2x speed playback) and I’ll give credit where credit is due. Vizard says he can’t loose, not because he thought his cam will win, but because the amount of data he’ll get from the test will help him develop his cam selection program for LS engines. Which he admits is not good yet.

This is what happens when you work on engines that don't have a purple shaft to choose from... Ma Mopar gave us perfection.. there is no reason to stray.

The winner also said he entered a streetable cam, he said he used their basic lobes that they use for their street cams.

Every cam is "streetable" kinda like guys with 3000hp on the street is streetable...

Guess depends on point of view :)

But Streetable in a reliable kind of way, how miles you should expect out of your engine.
well.. from the sounds my engine made last night i'm expecting upwards of 35 miles :)

Funny some making a big deal about tuning and I would of like for him too, many to give the naysayer one less thing to ***** about :) But obviously time and cost wouldn't allow for it. He tuned for the base line cam the one at the bottom of the page. All the builders/grinders I've seen had no problem with him running the same tune on each and even said it was the fair way to do it.

Why the hell would anyone send in a “street car grind” camshaft to a camshaft competition where average hp/tq AND peak hp/tq is what’s being tested and graded on? Vizard is saying he lost because he compromised in his cam choice to make it more streetable? You’ve got to be fuckin kidding me. He cared about the valvetrain in a dyno mule? Piss off. I ain’t believing that.
I was referring to the lobe profile. Matter of fact, the guy that won used street lobe profiles as well. You’re 2 pages late to this party

Hope your not telling me to piss off. That would be down right unfriendly.

Gone out for rip yet ?
"rip" is relative :) I have bout 20 miles on it... i got new mufflers yesterday, the gibsons were too loud.. it's going ok.. the 318 is a turd so far :) Trans won't kickdown at all and shifts into 2nd too soon no matter the throttle i give it, so something is wrong there.. all in all it's coming along.
