Exhaust Band Clamps

-
If you're band clamping a lap joint, do you have to cut a couple slits in the overlapping tube so the clamp tightens it down more?
A lap joint shouldn't need slits. A butt joint are two pipes the same size. A lap joint is a pipe with a inside diameter the same as the outside diameter of the joining pipe. One pipe fits inside the other and the band clamp is formed for the 2 different OD pipes.

trim, extend, put joint where there is room.....but with no pictures.....just a guess.
:poke:

I use these clamps on two of my cars and they work perfectly. I will use them for any exhaust connection that has room for them in the future. I had to remove the exhaust on one of the cars and they come apart and reassemble so much nicer with the band style clamps.

Kind of nice to be able to install a muffler and not damage it in case you don't like the sound. Easier to resell when they aren't all hacked up.

I am using these exclusively on my recently upgraded 2 1/2 inch exhaust. I cut out the welded in Flowmasters and installed Dynomax turbos. Also running H pipe and tips. All are non slotted slip in (lap) connections except for the tips which are butt connected. Excellent!!!!

That would be ok if the pipes hadn't been compressed by the U clamp. To do it so it doesn't leak or loosen, you need to leave a U-clamp on there or you need to cut out that section and put in a new clean section. That would require welding or additional band clamps.

Got the clamp today put it on and it fit good. Tightened it down with the bolts positioned to the side for ground clearance and it is tight as hell and not going anywhere. Also, the u bolt clamp was leaking slightly but the band clamp is not leaking a bit. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The small ridge the u bolt clamp put in the pipe didn't hurt a thing since it was in one small area on the larger pipe. It still sealed fine. Now it has plenty of room between the pipe and the cross member so as not to rattle.

I have limited experience using band type clamps for exhaust. I have a slip joint and have a standard U style clamp on it now. I need to lose the U clamp as it touches the cross member frame every once in a while. The band clamp would offer a lot more clearance. The mid pipe slips over the head pipe, so they have different outside diameters. Is this the correct type band clamp I need for this situation? It appears so from the description. Thank you drive through.

Oh well. I thank you for thinkin of me though. I'm sure you could sell them if you put a for sale ad up. I'm impressed. They work really well.

ya I bought them to use on my duster but I had fitment issues with the Jeg's exhaust I bought and ended up taking it to an exhaust shop and the had to rebend some of the pipes to make every thing fit $500 later on top of the $230 for the exhaust kit

ugh. I cannot stand companies can't make things that fit.

to be honest heart throb makes the kits for Jeg's and other companies to sell but there designed for use with hooker comp headers and I guess my TTI were just enough different that's what caused my issues

I'd assume those were for butt joints. ***-U-ME! How do they compress a round pipe (with no slits in it). If it were a butt-fit, the clamp would seal both OD's and then become the seal in the middle. Do they sell these as stepped for different pipe OD's? I would not expect to slit a new pipe for these to work.....but if they are working in your application...moot point.

I'd think even that one that is stepped for id/od pipe connecting would be better suited as a butt fit to allow very easy disassembly as the pipes never interface with each other. Just uses the clamp as the "wrap" between the 2 pipes. The smooth wall models are the true 2.5/2.5 butt splice. It even says SLIT fitted id/od connections but id rather keep the pipes free of any additional cuts if this is a true union and not a support application. Dont know how this style would compress a non slit OD pipe onto an ID...ever try and break an egg in your hand by squeezing it? Pretty hard as the force is equally applied to the entire round surface (eg. Submarine hull). @RustyRatRod I wonder of the slip fit model you have would seal equally well put together as a butt seam and then clamped down. Then you would have no effort required to separate these in 8 years as there would be no Rusty(s) steel pipe to steel pipe bonding.

Yeah, even the instructions of the stepped model say to insert pipes before clamping so....disregard...Butts are butts and slip joints are still slips.

I am using both types. I have my mufflers butt clamped and added a short piece of smaller id inside for insurance because of the weight. My tips are straight butt joined. I am using stepped at my H-pipe. No issues.

They don't compress the pipe the band clamps tight around the pipe when you torque the bolt down the ones for butt joints work good also I have used both with no issues and you don't slit the pipe on slip joints just put the band on the pipe slip the pipes together and torque down on the bolts and your good to go

Interesting...the summit brand instructions pdf says nothing about a slit (as expected) lap joint while another does mention a slit outer pipe. Trying to find it. Yes, a clamp manufacturer site says "lap joint--- ID/OD slip fit connection preferably with compression slit(s)".....so it could clamp using od onto id as well as just a common clamping of both sides. Sounds good to me. Anything beats those cheap rigid U strap style clamps that ruin the pipe.

Yes Summit an Jeg's are both made by heartthrob [Heartthrob Exhaust - Header Dual Kits] and there is no slit in the pipes and they supply the U bolts to clam them together which I don't like either

Here's what they look like after they've been on a while. Seven years in this case.

An impact wrench made removal much easier.

This is not the normal application (or maybe it is!? LOL) Looks like I cut stub and tacked the tailpipe on. Guess I'll be doing that again tommorrow.

Here’s the band clamp that’s been installed for 8 plus years on my Charger, still looks new.
