Are they?

I heard that Quality with Fel-Pro has decreased significantly of the last few years and the Small Block Chrysler head gaskets (10008 ) are a prime example.

If they are poor quality, then who do you get gaskets from?

I have a 408 Eddy headed engine and did not see much evidence of 'Push' after 200 miles.

btw: ‘push’ = cylinder to cylinder blow-by throught head gaskets.

Post a picture of the deck surfaces. 99.9% of head gasket failures have nothing to do with the gaskets. Everybody's quality has gone down in recent years. But the head gaskets have not changed much since they came out with Permatorque in the early 80s.

Well,i Never had problems with FEL-PRO gaskets, actually,is the best gaskets i can get here!Builded at least 3 318 engine's with Fel-Pro without problems! To tell you the truth people here use lower quality(sometimes hand made) gaskets and they don't have any problems with that, and Like moper said"99.9% of head gasket failures have nothing to do with the gaskets.".are you sure your problem is the gaskets?

No problems running them on my Edelbrock headed 416....

I used the same head gaskets on my 340 and "pushed" out all 8 cylinders. It was because I am running about 14:1 and used the wrong gasket, my fault not FelPro's. I run the Mr Gasket MLS now and have been on the car 2 years. They did seep a little water at first but this is pretty common for MLS gaskets.

Cometic....the best headgaskets on the market. You can order them in any bore size you want and custom thicknesses.....try getting that from Fel-Pro

I have used Fel-pro's for over 20 yrs. and never blew one. Like Moper said it's usually the surface being uneven that causes the problem. Many people resurface the heads but how many actually resurface the block. It's just a important.

Amen. One thing I do know is I will never use another Mr. Gasket "rebuilder" gasket set. All gaskets that touched oil leaked.

They may "seap" fluids right thru them too, if things arent lined up perfect so the crush is even...lol. DAMHIK

Buying cheap gaskets is just like anything else, you get what you pay for. The Mr. Gasket rebuilder set is a cheap set and I would not buy it. But Mr. Gasket like FelPro has high end gaskets also so it would not be fair to compare their cheap line gaskets with their high end gaskets. The thing with Cometic is they don't make cheap gaskets so everything you get from then will be the good stuff.

Cometic requires 50RA surface on the deck and heads. I doubt out-of-box Eddy's are that smooth.

Anyone used/heard of ROL gaskets?

Cometic recommends 50Ra as the roughest. Edelbrock heads are right usually smewhere between 40 and 50. If I am using MLS gaskets, I will have the new heads milled to make sure it's smoother. Most modern auto makers want finishes of 30-50 for iron block/aluminum head combos. And the smoother tha better. I'm pretty sure that's why most Cometic installs leak for the first few heat cycles. If yours did or does, the finish is either boarderline, or not smooth enough. Felpro Permatorque will generally work from 50-110Ra...lol. The rep I spoke to said again, smoother the better, but that's what they were designed for. The new shop has a profilometer :D

I have blew the napa nitoseals couldnt use the felpro not thick enough.Right now I have the scce proseals good to 13-1.They also make the titan copper with no need for an oring and they come in custom size and best of all they dont leak mls do that. they will be on my next motor. Also more important always retorQe after a heat cycle

The Permatorque are the 1008's, the ones that Eddy recommends? And you're saying that they are made for a smoother surface than the Eddy heads come with?

:wack:

lol, that smiley thing is perfect.

I've used the 8553PT ones, the 1008 ones (edelbrock reccomends), and the 1100 ones (no wire), and Cometics. One set of the Cometic ones seaped at first, but I didnt do the heads or assemble the long block. Just the short on that one, so I cant say whether that was a finish issue, or a sealant/install issue. According to Felpro, the permatorque coating (it's just the blue stuff they spray/emboss on it) will seal on a surface from ultra smooth (30Ra) to as rough as 110Ra. for comparision, 30Ra looks similar to a CD how it reflects light. 110Ra is what it looks like when you take a belt sander to a peice of iron. So you could say it covers the whole spectrum. But, if any oil or stuff is on either surface, the sealant may not truely "flow" into the crevices between the peaks of the cutter marks, and the fluids will get past it. That in turn causes the rest of the gasket to loose grip, and it will fail. Alumionum moves all over the place, and when the iron doesnt move much, the gasket has to "take up the slack". That's why Cometic recommends you run the engine when you do see a seap. The sealer they apply has to do the same thing. On Cometic engines I dont run coolant at first. It's easier to get water to eavporate away than the additives in coolant. Switch to coolant after it's been heat cycled a few times. And always properly re-torque after a few cycles.

The finish required for a Cometic gasket is nothing exotic, any quality machine shop can and does finish heads to the Cometic spec as normal practice.

I've had many people claim that their Felpro's didn't leak, they don't know what their looking for, it's as plain as the headline in Sunday's paper if you know what you looking at.

The finish on an Eddy head is fine for Cometics but, who installs Eddy heads out of the box without doing a fine trueing cut first anyhow? Not in our shop.

If you have any doubts about the finish on the block or heads, just spay a couple of light coats of Coppercoat on both sides of the gaskets before you install them. Quality distributors of Cometic gaskets will supply you gaskets specific to your bore size and allow the correct amount of clearence to the gasket bore. This may range from .030 for most applications to as much as .100 for some heads which are known to move around more.

They offer gaskets in the catalog in about 10 different thickness' to achieve correct compression ratios and quench, actually a qualified distributor can order about 30 different sizes by using different combinations of center cores and sometimes even going to a 5 or 7 layer gasket for specific applications.

Cometic uses many new and very effect materials for many different sealing duties, Chemically Foamed Viton rubber over aluminum in various thickness'. This material has a 80% recovery rate and requires No Silicone to seal and can usually be re-used in most applications. Great for timing covers, oil pans, water pumps, intakes etc. Their Aramid fiber is again available in many thickness' up to .188 the perfect sealer for quality cast Valve covers, carburetor base and metering block/bowl gaskets.

Every engine we build get's Cometic gaskets top to bottom, the right materials for each application. We now even offer a complete engine kit with all our tested and proven gaskets for BB and SB, many of which we have developed with Cometic and some exclusive to only us. Our intake gaskets for BB are available in 4 port sizes, SB come in 3 sizes for various head port sizes and without all the extra holes for crossovers. Our exclusive line of Aramid fiber carb gaskets WILL NOT STICK EVER. BG and Holley have a "Non-Stick" gasket, what a joke, our's are NEVER Stick.

Nothing worse than a brand new engine that pukes oil, silicone ozzing out of the front cover, chunks floating around in the pan plugging everything up.

They've now come up with a 3 layer Stainless Steel MLS Header gasket, several thickness', if your burn these out you need new headers.

It's 2007, try some gaskets that were designed with modern materials and technology, this old paper and silicone sealing of engines is as obsolete as a crank hanging out from your front bumper.

Did you know that we can have a custom Aramid Fiber or AFM (Aluminum foamed material) gasket made in 5 days or less working from an old gasket or even a rubbing and in most cases for only an additional $15.00 set up fee?

Quality product, custom gaskets, modern materials Made in the USA, what more could you want?

Hummmmmmm, blonded, 5-5 , not more than 120 lbs, ........

Anyone used/heard of ROL gaskets?

I have used them at least as often as Fel-Pro. I have never had an issue with them or with Fel-Pro gaskets.

I believe ROL's primary business is making OEM gaskets for the manufacturers more so than after market replacement like Fel-Pro.

i spray mine with a coat of regular spray paint and install them when the paint is still tacky (not wet). last time i pulled the heads the gasket had to be scrapped off with a razor blade. sounds kinda cheezy but it works.

66, I know you sell, them, so I can understand the pitch. Just out of curiosity..What are the retail prices on your A and B (with valley pan?) engine kits? Cometics are greatly improved..I guess I just dont understand needing a '07 gasket on an intake or header that hasnt changed in 30-40 years. Especially at the '07/made in USA price. I'd venture to say I'd have an easier time selling a customer on a set of $800 pistons, than a pair of $180 head gaskets on a typical 400hp small block build. The last major step forward was use of the non-retorqing type gaskets and loosing the steel shims. That was big then too. I'm a firm beleiver in clean, and I dont overuse silicone SEALER. (It is not a gasket maker in most spots..simply a filler for misc surface defects on the sealing surface.) As far as the finish..Most automotive machine shops in my area (I hear CT has a bunch..there are at least 20 within a 45 minute drive of me, and the one I use is an hour and fifteen away now) cannot get teh right finish. They are using old equipment, where the feed rate and cutter speed cannot be adjusted enough to get the right finish for cometics. I'm certain that's part of the reason Cometics get a bad internet rap. They make a killer gasket, but the issues are with surface prep at the machine shop level. And as I said, Edelbrocks are close..but marginal at best. At least thats what the $4000 profilometer (diamond stylus deal, not the "paint chip example" versions) says. Maybe the shops around your area are better ;)
