FINALLY GOT IT BACK!

-
I have owned many 71 Duster 340's. They all had the "Duster 340" decal on the back. I never saw a 70 - 72 340 Duster without it having the 340 on the back. Unless it was removed for some reason for a new decal replacement. They got scratched up very easily when leaning in the trunk area. The stripe could have been damaged and replaced.
I have a 1971 340 duster and when I acquired the car in 1990 it was all original faded paint with the duster cloud on the rear panel without the 340 callout. I thought the same thing it should say 340. I have since come to the conclusion that 71 cars didn't have the 340 on the rear . Seen quite a few without and now another. Just my observations you may disagree. Great story by the way . Can't stop reading till I'm finished. Lol.

Finally finished reading. Again great story, great job, beautiful car. I agree with the statement made about the cars being assembled back in the day as they were hastily put together and old stock used up before new stock implemented . Also decals were located in slightly different spots / angles, factory boo boos ??
Definitely one of the best cars / stories.
Congratulations

I have owned many and have seen them both ways with and without the 340 decal. Mostly with the Duster 340 on the rear. Here are just two doing a quick search of survivors.

Steve you have certainly been around a lot more dusters than I have. However, I have been around this one for 52 years! The tail panel has never been touched. Also I have slotted bumpers and some late 71 did not get them.

That could be a factor. Late 71's may not have had them. Every car I had that had the stripe still on it did. I have old ads from the 70's showing the 340 on the back on 71's . Also just the Duster and dust storm on twister's and standard models.

I never had a 71 Duster 340 with a blue engine or slotted bumpers like yours. I know they had them but non ever went through my hands. Many 72's though. Every 340 Duster I ever had had the Duster 340 decal.

You got a rare one for shure!!!sleeper callout delete ...survivor paint 72 even had callout

It could be a simple thing as the supply on the assembly line ran low / out and they just keep the line going with intentions of correcting at a later time, or like stated previously early build as opposed to late build. My car has a build date of Dec 02 70. When I painted my duster and re-striped it I included the 340 callout cause at the time I preferred it. I believe if that's the way the car came from the factory then it's either correct for that car, or a boo boo.

Mike looking through the thread I noticed your car has 71 twister stripes with 340 call outs / 72 340 stripes. Originally it had 71 340 stripes on an old picture with the 340's attached . Then the stripes were deleted on another old picture. Also the car at one time had a set of BB fenderwell headers as per pictures. Could the 340 decals and call outs been removed by your dad when a BB was installed.

The dust cloud is just my personal presence. I know the car came with different stripe. Tail panel is original paint and decal.

I like the Dust cloud myself. I just gave a OEM stripe kit to a guy that comes here It was for a 71 Twister but also had the 340 call outs. Couldn't sell them because of their age. He is going to use them on a /6 Duster. I told him to buy Twister decals.

Dug out a few photos of my 71 duster when I acquired it in fall of 1990. Original faded paint out of North Carolina. Original faded stripes without 340 callout on rear similar to OP's car.

The V24's probably got 340 call out delete on the rear since the hood got the big call out

There is a 1972 black 340 duster on its way to Carlisle that will be in the survivors tent. All original 23,000 mile or very close that has 340 duster not duster 340. So it is backwards and it is original. Factory goof that got by quality control. In my opinion it is correct for that car. I'll try to remember to post a picture this weekend.

There were all sorts one of cars built back then. People still say what color the engine has to be for what year it was built. They were just pumping out cars, so what if there was a mix up. They didn't care, just sell the damn thing. I believe anything from this car company. I'm glad you posted the picture just to prove the point. I have seen some strange mix ups over they years. But the experts are not always right. Even if they think they are. Still love your car too :)

Saw this beautiful 71 duster at a recent show june17/23 albeit restored but apparently correct ??

Hello Noel, Liam here and you posted a few pics wondering about the rear Duster cloud. Maybe these images will answer your question. Attached, 1971 Plymouth Chrysler 340 Duster, have a very good look at the rear tail panel. No {340 Duster Cloud}

This is an original Survivor car that I have. It just has the duster emblem on the rear between the tail lights. Back in the day I would look at every other 71 Duster 340 and they're all the same way. Also the parts counter book specifies 1970 got the duster 340 decal between the tail lights. The same counter book says the 1971 only get the Duster decal between the tail lights. The 1972 duster it says then again gets the Duster 340 decal between the tail lights. Don't forget even though there are Survivor cars out there some of them may have got damaged to the rear end and then the body shop would slap on the Duster 340 decal.

Hi Steve, thanks for the response. There was a reason for Chrysler to either attach the Duster/ swirl decal or the 340 Duster/ swirl. From what I understand, it had to do with the side strips on the car, those with the 340 stripes on the side(V8W) did not get the 340 duster swirl, while cars that had the V5X or V5W side stripe got 340 Duster Swirl.
Many that we have listed, some as survivors are the same as yours.

If you would be kind enough to share the fendertag, I’ll add you into the registry. Either her or private message me. Thank you.

This is an original 72 duster 340 4 gear car. It has been parked since the early 80s. U can still read the Duster 340 and see the Tasmanian Devil in the dust cloud. Kim

Hi Steve, better than showing you a survivor pic of the 71 340 Duster with only the Duster/ cloud…. I’ve attached a picture of a 71-340 Duster in the showroom, this picture is from October of 1970. I will note this car has the V8X and V6X decal stripes. Hope this makes sense to you, thanks Liam
