This was our full process with the door handles through pics.

Aint stitch welding sheet metal fun? Not.....looks great!

Nobody on here wants to see my first shot at paint. We did it in our barn. Kinda looked like a farmer painted it too! Beautiful work guy, can’t wait to see it complete. You are very fortunate to have a good mentor.
Nothing wrong with farmer paint my friend. Someone has to feed the world.

Absolutely, Fairport!
I thought so, I stopped by your house last spring when I saw the car and said I would come back and pick your brains after this Covid thing (LOL) was over. The car looks good, love the tires/rims! Looks like Barry's shop?

Oh yes of course, I remember! Hope ur doing well and hopefully in the summer we will be able to talk cars! Actually the shop is in Clifton springs, A2D is the name of it.

That sounds good, stay safe & I'll PM you. Congrats on the retirement and good luck with your paint job. I'm going to check out that shop, not too far away.

It's great to have someone take the time to show you the trade. I myself mentored someone. It started as a hobby for me. Then Profesional for 20 years. I could do it all. Sadly the trade pay never increased like a Mechanics had and made me bitter, sore back and knees , no 401K ect:. I changed careers at 42. Morgage and two kids in daycare. I survived. I didn't open my toolbox for 4 years. When I did it was to hobby on my own two cars and I love it as a hobby . Sounds like money isn't an issue for you and I can imagine how rewarding it is for you . Congrats! Now just make sure you take care of yourself and use your PPE. Keep the piscs coming.
My father in law was a paint and body man and I definitely saw firsthand how hard the career can be on your body. Who knows how my already aching body will hold up but my hope is to do it part time/hobby type thing that creates a little extra spending cash. Time will tell, but it sure is fun right now!

I loved the work.If the pay increased like Mechanics pay increased in the 90's I probably would still be doing it. In Massachusetts the Insurance companies regulate the Collision work rate. Everybody has there hands in your pockets. I would get paid around 20+ hours for welding on a rear quarter panel then they cut it down to 10 hrs.
If you didn't keep good track of your flatrate hours your employer would skim some hours off ect:
You'll be fine part time and learning everyday. The guy I mentored is still in the trade. Now he teaches me the new and upcoming stuff.

Retired last week and now back at the project. Hoping to finally get my focus on the car again and this thing finished. Will post updates as I go.

Nice your back at it. I would have primed the entire hood but that's just me. Keep the pics coming.

Paint looks nice, you picked the best color to learn on, because it shows everything.

I worked in body shops for around 15 years when I was younger, when I quit the business, it took me around 6 months to start feeing normal.
The chemicals will take their toll on your body.
I only do my own cars now.

I quit the business, it took me around 6 months to start feeing normal.

After 20 years I quit. I was allergic to everything, had a cold every other month. After 2 years out I am allergic to nothing , I hardly catch a cold or get sick. I think my immune system was breaking down. My instincts tell me if I did it much longer I'd get cancer . Took a 4 year break then restored my 2 darts. It took awhile to get the knack of some things back .

Yep my father in law did paint and body. He’s a mess now. Doing my own car now, then will do it just part time with the goal of just working on some restorations here and there. Great thing about being retired is, if it starts adversely affecting me, I walk away.

Very nice work for your first time. As good as this looks, you will be amazing after you get a little practice. I've been painting cars for about 40 years, and that is the best firstie I've seen. No substitute for having a good teacher, eh?

Now just make sure you take care of yourself and use your PPE.
Amen to that. I watch a BUNCH of car shows on Motor Trend, and 3/4 of the time the guys are sanding filler and/or primer with dust going everywhere, and nobody has a mask on. Maybe they really do wear masks most of the time, and they just took them off for a few seconds for the camera???????

He is a great teacher with plenty of patience for all my questions. Definitely helps A LOT.
