first start break in

I always drill a 1/8" hole in the stat if it doesn;t come with one and i use balanced thermostats in most cases. Also - I run just water for break in, I run a box fan on high in front of the radiator, and I don;t fill the radiator to capacity as heat does expand it, and if there's room it can burp with no problems.

there is some good advice here and some that is pure bullshit its up to you to sort it out .

Bingo.

I would do the break in with just water, then add a little antifreeze or water wetter afterwards mainly for the lubricating properties (keeps the water pump happy).

Also, have a fire extinguisher handy when you do the break in.....I only had a garden hose handy back in 2001 when I was breaking in a 360 I built. The remote oil filter line ruptured 13 minutes into the cam break in and shot hot oil onto the headers making a HUGE fire ball. My friend just reacted and pulled the hose out of the radiator and sprayed the oil fire with water (not realizing it was an oil fire) making it worse. I simultaneously ran dove head first into the car to kill the motor. Once the motor was off the fire died quickly...I got lucky...no real damage other than some scorched wiring....and we had a cool little fire floating down the street too, lol.

The moral to this story, ALWAYS HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER.

Got two from a customer of mine a couple of days ago.
I'm scratching my head trying to think of where to buy a box fan in the middle of winter ??
went to machine shop yesterday they're almost done they just have to drop the push rods in and adjust the rockers and do quality control should have it done by the end of the week.

hi, on a cam break in, use water only!!! no antifreeze!! reason is, water leak might happen, turns oil white, no damage. antifreeze will hurt the babbit in bearings. like pouring acid on metal. it eats the babbit. a restrictor ring is best for cam run in. a cam does not need to be run 20 to 30 minutes. 10 minutes is more than enough. cams go flat in first 2 minutes , not last 2 minutes. I've always ran my cams in 10 minutes or less.

Update : push rods are to short :banghead: what next!! If i got the motor back by friday I'd have time over the weekend to paint and assembly. The weather is supposed to hold good through Tuesday to push outside and do first start ? I would have liked to make the first test & tune on March 1st . Not so much to take passes (that would be great !!) ,but put some break in miles, go through tec to see if all my winter projects are legal, and just be out there with the men I'll be racing with. I'm starting to get the feeling it's not going to happen . :wack:
