Fuel Line Rerouting

I have a leak somewhere between the pump and filter on my 69 Barracuda. Problem is that the location is under and behind the AC compressor and cannot really be accessed without removing it. Question is can that section of the line be rerouted to get around the compressor? Or is that a set distance between pump and filter?
 
What motor? On stock LA you'd have a hard line direct from pump to carb. This would tuck up close to the ac compresser. Fuel filter before pump.

So long as pump is good you should be able to reroute within reasonable distance. I have mine run from pump to 2nd fuel filter on sidewall (to prevent fuel from boiling) and then up and over block to carb. No fuel starving as far as I could see.

Considering from the factory that car could have had from a slant 6 all the way to a 440....Plus it's over 50 years old and might have a small block chevy in it. Maybe you could throw us a bone here?
 
Sorry guys. It is the original 318 and factory air. (Which does not work but that's another issue for another day)
 
I would think that you could get the fuel line from the pump to the top of the manifold from underneath. At worst take out the alternator ( 2 easy bolts) as it routs up, behind and to the drivers side if the alt brakets.

Then the upper "S" shapped part should not be a problem.

If you have a leak from behind the AC pump my bet is it's the fitting on the carb or the upper "S" piece attached to that fitting.

The fitting is a bad design, the "S" shaped line puts counter clockwise torque on it, and mine have always had issues not loosining. Not to mention there is a gasket that you can not tighten the fitting too much or you crush it and start a leak there too.

My 318 w/AC fuel line was as pictured above. AC was never an issue, however filter change was a bear do to location under alternator. Yore leak could be at filter tubing.
 
Gas is pooling right on top of the pump housing you show in pic 1. The fuel filter is just beyond the end of that tube pointing to the right in that pic. Might be leaking at the filter connection and running down the tube. Thanks guys for all of the info. This site is always awesome.

That makes sense get some hose and change that out first. Could be a crack in the line too but bad hose or clamps easy first step
 
Upon further review, the clamp attaching the tube to the hard line came off. So I am assuming that the gas was being forced out of there and starving the carb. Car wouldn't start even with starter fluid. Football games starting so it will have to wait.
 
That "clamp" would have to be leaking A LOT of fuel to block any to the carb. I think you had another problem there

I had trouble with my fuel line sealing. It was new OEM style hard lines, new KV (IIRC) fuel hose and new dated metal filter. I used the flat spring clamps that came with the kit. I ended up getting Corbin wire clamps and it has been dry ever since.
 
I will start with sealing that up and replacing the filter. You might be right and I may have to look deeper. Fuel pump is not that old.

Since we now consider ourselves Georgia residents (after living everywhere else) we root for the Dawgs. My wife went to University of Arkansas for a while so we root for them too.
 
Took care of the leaks and with some priming got it started. It will run for a few minutes then just stops. Did this a half dozen times. Sometimes I had to prime the carb again but it would start. Can't seem to get it to run any longer than 2 or 3 minutes. Any ideas guys?

Hard to say.
Do you have a timing light? Attach it and see if you get solid flashing when running or cranking, or does the light go out occasionally, or doe sit go out when the engine dies (but before she stops turning)?
That would indicate a bad connection somewhere in the ignition circuits.

Once it dies, try pumping the accelerator a few times. Do you get any fuel squirting from the accel pump in the carb when you do? If not, carb might be dry and you could have a fuel supply issue. Either bad leak, bad pump, clogged filter, clogged pickup in the tank, etc...

It's also possible for a coil, ballast resistor, or ignition module to fail once warm. All three of them can also get damaged if the key is left "on" for an extended period without the engine running. Not always, but sometimes.

If you let us know what you find with those first checks, it would help narrow down the possible issues.
 
How are you priming the carb?

what is the idle RPM set to?

have you replaced the fuel cap lately?

THOUGHT...

when you had a leak how did you fix it? New hose? maybe some of the old hose scraped off into the fuel line to the carb and is blocking the inlet port? I have seen some carbs that have a small screen in the fuel inlet port ( motorcraft IIRC) perhaps your does too???
 
Priming with gas. It wouldn't turn over at all before I replaced the small section of hose. Now it does easily but with priming. I did not replace the fuel filter when I had it apart so that will be the easiest and least costly fix. I will see if that does anything. The carb is in dire need of replacing but I was waiting until I put a new intake on and convert from 2 bbl to a 4 bbl. I would not be surprised if it is a carburetor issue. I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace the pump but that is not that old.

What I'm asking is are you squirting some fuel into the intake or are you filling the bowl through a vent?

The carb is in dire need of replacing but I was waiting until I put a new intake on and convert from 2 bbl to a 4 bbl. I would not be surprised if it is a carburetor issue. I guess it wouldn't hurt to replace the pump but that is not that old
Rebuild it yourself, it's not that hard.

My thought was if you put a non vented cap on and it requires a vented one. Having the cap off says it's not the fuel tank venting.

There are many easy tests you can do.

You can run a hose off the fuel filter into a can, prime the carb and start the engine see if you have flow from your fuel pump through the filter.

USE ALL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH OPEN FUEL.

Put a "T" in the fuel line to the carb and see what fuel pressure you have while it is running

How long has the fuel in the tank been sitting with the cap off? You might have absorbed an excessive amount of water in your tank. Gas is lighter than water so you might be sucking water into your carb.
 
I am pouring gas directly in to the carbeurator. Could I possibly be pouring enough to run the engine for a couple of minutes?
