My Demon came with a non- original 225 with non-original matching auto trans on the column. There is no trim tag (it rusted out). So my question is, without a trim tag or build sheet, is there a way to tell if the original engine was a 198 or a 225 slant six?

I don't think so, unless you find a build sheet. The car has partial vin stampings on it in places, but I am unsure the engine numbers will be among them.

What year is it? Is the metal tag on the driver's door jamb gone also? If it's still there, a little research could come up with the information you are looking for. The "trim tag" you mentioned, are you referring to the a "fender tag?"

I thought the Demons had the VIN on the dash at that point?

Did you look for a build sheet? They are often found in the seat springs, behind the glovebox, under the flooring, and other places. That might have a clue for you.

In my 198ci Demon, the VIN is also present on the passenger side inner fender.

Oh yes, it's a C code. Thanks everyone for the replies. To be clear about the VIN locations, it would be in the windshield, in the drivers door frame, on the fender tag, on the passenger fender apron, and on the rear package shelf?

The stamping on the block by the alternator bracket mount will tell you if the block was a 225 or a 198 originally. Clean the area off and see if you can read it.

At some point they also put a partial VIN on the right (passenger) side of the block towards the rear of the block, stamped into a machine pad. This is not on the earlier engines.

May be a long shot, but have you looked for the build sheet? Usually found tucked under the rear seat springs.
If that is also gone then no way that I know of. 198's were USUALLY for fleet sales.
Good Luck and God Speed.

I don't believe this is a normal location for a VIN stamp on the Demon. Normally, there is only a partial VIN stamped on the body which is Plant, Year, last six of VIN numbers. It might be possible from its appearance that your fender stamp was put there for possibly export reasons.

The partial VIN is normally on the top of the radiator support, and may be under the coolant sticker if one is present.

Also, the VIN or partial VIN on 68 & up A bodies is not found on the driver side door pillar, they are dash, rad support, and trunk lip on Barracuda and Darts, or package shelf on Duster, Demon and Dart Sports

@OneOfMany : You're right.
In addition to the typical Chrysler stamp locations, due to European mandatory regulations the VIN is present in 2 other locations.
On the passenger side inner fender. Same font, but bigger and a little bit clumsy
Probably punched by the Chrysler International agent.

And also on a belgian metallic tag for the car homologation (also on the passenger side inner fender)

On the other side, I think that there is no VIN on the driver side door pillar (only a "manufactured for export" sticker), but I'll check.

To resume, originally from Chrysler Corp. there is the complete VIN on the dashboard, the fender tag and of course the build sheet.
And a partial one on the radiator support, engine block, gearbox and under the package shelf.
