cuzz I'm fixin to need some of yalls expertease and knowledge. First things first. My namw is Robert. I live in Katy, Texas. I have recently been given a 1967 Dart. Its a two door hardtop with a 225 slant 6, auto trans, a/c, power steering, drum brakes. It needs everything. This will be my first Mopar rebuild. Years ago I had a 68 Coronet 440 with a 318. Other than general repairs and a few transmissions I had to replaced, that is all the mopar expierance I have. Take that back, I did have to replace a 225 in a Dart. Think it was a 71. Anyway, my intentions are to make a driver out of this car. I do however want it to ruuuuuun!!! Gonna go with a stroked 360/408. I could use some tranny suggestions. 904 or 727? Like to know why one over the other as well. Beings I have to change the rear end, I'm thinkin 9' Ford. I need to know what cars are good doners for converting to front disc brakes. The car I'm workin on is pretty much all there other than one or two pcs of trim and the passenger door window. ((Anybody got one??? Please!!!))

Gonna leave this here for now. If any of you can help me out, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Robert

AKA ............. Crank It Up!!!

welcome Robert.. I live in Corpus.... the 904 is gonna take less to turn the stroker so u will have more from ur engine but the 727 is a stout tranny and never have to worry about it failing you if built right...

by the way I have a 8 3/4 and a 3.23 posi along w/a 904 tranny if you need one.
I'll let the 8 3/4 and posi go for $500 and the tranny go for $75..

Jason

Thanks Jason. I'm gonna be honest and tell you I dont know what tranny I have now. Like I said, its in a 67 Dart behind a 225. I'm just starting this project and need some dirrection. Whatever tranny I go with and have built for this car, I need it to last. Regaurdless of a little performance loss. Better a little slow than no go at all. Depending on what tranny I have and second which I decide to go with, I may be interested in your 904. Your 8 3/4 sound good also but ........ $$$ No gotta right now. I was gonna go with the Ford 9" simply because their easier to find and git chunks for. Right now I'm gutting the interior. Its toast!!! Later I'm gonna be looking for some buckets and a floor console. Right now I really need that window to keep the weather out. I've got a long ways to go befor I really start looking for parts. That doesnt mean I'm not keeping my eye out for some now, only that I cant afford much rigt now. My labor doesnt cost me anything so thats where I'm starting. The way I see it, the more I know now, the more it will help me find what I'm gonna need later.

Thanks again for your offers. Maybe later.

Robert

youu are going to need a 727 8 3/4 that will work the best for you dont go
with the phord rear end it is lame the 8 3/4 will be quite enouf for your needs

Welcome to the board. Please keep it all Mopar. The 8 3/4 is
just as good of a rear axle. A good built 904 will handle a
small block stroker with no problems. Good luck with it.

Im in Rosenberg if you need help maybe i can be that xtra set of hands you need sometime and you can return the favor.

the 904 in your car now will not work behind the small block V8 so you will have to change the trans

Yes you can get a 9" out of a truck cheap enough, but then you will need to get it shortened, new axles, weld on the perches, U bolts, plates and proabably a custom made driveshaft. I think at the $400 offered for the A body 8 3/4 is the better deal. Bolt it in get a driveshaft for the dart with 8 3/4 ( I think I had to have a 53" Dshaft) and you will be driving cheaper than the 9" Ford

Dream Big, collect the parts as you can, and hope you get the car on the road in the future

O.K. lets say I go with tha 8 3/4. Are chunks for um hard to find? Also, whats it run to rebuild one? I see there's still a difference of opinion in transmissions. From what I understand, the 904 is a lighter duty and lighter in weight tranny. Therefor easier to turn and it reduces around 75 lbs off your car. So why go with a lighter trans if your not really trying to shave weight? Surely the performance loss turning the heavier trans isnt that substantial. We're only talking about a respectable running street car here. If I'm gonna spend tha bucks to git a tranny built, (thinking the cost of building eather one will be about the same + - a few bucks) then its has be whichever one is gonna be tha strongest regaurdless of weight or slight engine performance loss.
I would appreciate if somebody would give me a list of doner cars and years I need to be looking for to convert to disc brakes. I, like most, have been tinkering around with cars pretty much all my life. I had to. Never could afford to put one in tha shop. My problem is that I dont know what all will interchange on um or what combinations work best togather.

Befor I forget ........ I may have found one of the very few places that still has some new glass for older cars. I was told they have the window I need but I dont want to pay new prices for it. ($265) This aint gonna be no trailered show car so used glass will be just fine. I'm going to talk to tha guy Monday and ask him to give me a list of everything he has for Mopars up to about 1975. If anybody is building a Dart show car but still has driver glass in it, I may be able to hook you up. BUT ....... its gonna cost ya a smokin deal on some of your old glass I need for mine. I'll let yall know what I find.

Saw a 70 Swinger up for sale today. Tha guy claims he wants $2500 for it. I looked at that running 83000 original miles car and then thouht about mine. Its gonna cost me MORE than what he wants for that complete running car than what its gonna cost me to barely git started on mine. Sucks to be PO-FOLK!!! From what I've seen people selling parts for on ebay, maybe I aughta part this one out and buy his. (318 with an aluminium intake, 727 with a kit, 8 3/4 rear with traction bars. Been painted but has a few rust spots starting to pop up under tha paint. Interior isnt perfect but driveable. Ugly aluminium wheels. Pretty sure a wadd of hundred dollar bill would bring him down. I'm thinkin $1800-$2000. Problem is ........ I dont have it!!! If anybody is interested in it, I'll go take some pics for ya and git tha guys number.

Thanks everybody.

More later.

Welcome aboard, one thing is for sure the trans you have behind the 225 is not the same bolt pattern as the V8's, they simply just do not fit. I had one too.

So it boils down to getting eather a 904 for a V-8 or a 727. I still like tha idea of having the stronger of the two trans but it doesnt seem as though everybody agrees on which one that is. Somebody told me that some of the 727s have 4 gear planetaries like the 904s. Claimed they were used in old RVs and such. Is there any truth to that? If so, how do you identify between tha two without tearing it down?
Need to ask yall about engine heads. I have been told that the pre-magnum high swirl heads with 1.90 /165 valves are the way to go on a 360/408 stroker. That didnt make a lot of since to me. Why not go with the bigger mag ports and 2.02 valves? The reason I was given was that the pre-mag heads actually flow and mix air/fuel better. Was also told to use GM valves because they lighter due to having slightly smaller stems. Needless to say, I'm open to yalls views on this.
Found a doner 85 thuck with a 360 / auto. Ole boy claimed it ran but smoked a little. He parked it beings it wouldnt pass emissions a couple of years ago. Also claimed the tranny was rebuilt about a year or so prior to parking it. He didnt seem too happy about having tha tranny rebuilt and then only being able to drive it for another year or so. Said he just wanted it out of the way and I could have it for $500 bucks. I figure just tha tranny is worth that. Now ....... what tranny will that ole 85 truck have???

More later.
