In the past two weeks, we have made great progress on my friends 56 Studebaker Power Hawk. We got the decklid and the hood wet sanded and polished. And then we spent two whole days fighting the adjustment of the decklid. We tried everything. And finally today after fighting it for several more hours, I said, “let’s pull the decklid hinges off of your 56 Goldenhawk and try them.” The Golden Hawk is next in line for restoration. The hinges off of that worked perfectly. Looking at the hinges that didn’t work we see no reason at all for them not to work. This car is built like a tank. But it’s starting to come together.

Are the springs built into the hinges. I've run into fitment issues from new springs on old hinges. Good fun swapping springs.

One measure of how talented someone is in their craft is how easy they make it look. You, sir, do wonderful work.

I really like the lines on those old cars
Design is such a lost art. Everything from that era -- from kitchen appliances to automobiles to table saws -- was given just as much thought into design as functionality.

Funny you should mention that. I believe they were new springs on old hinges. I'll check, but I bet there is just enough slop in the old hinges that the new springs (two rather stiff ones on each hinge) pull it out of alignment. Maybe that is why the hinges out of the other car worked. The hinges and the springs have worn together. Good call. It was driving us crazy. And believe me, that is a very short drive for me.

I have had several examples of this manifest. Non worse than a 40's chevy. It was ridiculous.
