I'm about to change the insurance on my Barracuda from Allstate to Grundy. I'm looking at the form and they ask if you are going to use it for "rallying or racing". I intend to take the car down the dragstrip once in a while and possibly autocross it, but not all the time, maybe once or twice a year.

Also, right above where you sign, It says "I warrant my collector car will be used and maintained for hobby purposes and exhibition and not for racing, rallying, general transportation or backup transportation."

I'd like to hear from Grundy customers with similar situations. How did you respond? Other opinions welcome, too.

Thanks!

I'm not a Grundy customer but I think it's pretty obvious, if you say it's only for hobby purposes and you roll it on the track you're not covered. I just can't see it being any other way. The odds of wrecking your classic cruising on a sunny Sunday is entirely differenent than racing it.

My 2 cents

The owner of Grundy was on My Classic Car today, and he said you could take it to work, which is not allowed with other carriers.

Sure you can get the insurance.... But if you take it to the track and something happens you are 100% out of luck.

Just remember.... Nothing ever happens at the track. If you know what Im talking about.

Just guessing, but I doubt Allstate covers your car when it's being raced either.

I don't think ANY insurance company covers you when you're participating in an "organized competition." So I guess I would've been covered during all of the unorganized competitions I was involved in back in the 1970's. :-D

both my cars are insured with grundy,,now,,once upon a time i tried 2 other places,,,borh of them had tiny print,,basically you could go no where,,

grundy has changed that, you can go any place with your colector car,,sunday drive, cruise night vacation, rod run,joy riding etc,,,they do ask as far as i know that you keep in in some sorta shelter, garage perfered,,,i curently have one in a garage and one in a enclosed trailer,,,

they also ask for proof of another car for daily driver,,altho grundy DOES NOT limit you to milage like othere classic companies do, they dont allow driving to work every day,,,untill recently they didnt approve driving to work at all,,but they know people did,,like me,,,they told me once in a while is ok,,,,

grundy also invented what they call "AGREED VALUE" you tell them what you think your car is worth,,if its not to far off the planet they will insur it for that ammount, and charge accordingly,,, if some thng should happen to your car,,crashed,,stolen, they will pay up to that amount to fix or replace it,,and they do pay,,

when you file for a claim unlike other insurance companies they dont prorate your car,,you get what you insured it for,,,

if you wreck your car on the drag strip, its on YOU,,,, no company will pay up for a race car of any kind,,,,

GRUNDY is the best deal going,,,,cal and talk to CHUCK,,not one of the girls that answer,,tell him the guy with the black barracuda with the blower sent ya,,,,

i insure 2 cars,,,one for 25 grand,,one for 30 grand,,total ereplacement,, i pay around 370.00 a year total,,for both not each,,for both,.,,,this is my other insured car

I appreciate the comments so far, but I think some of you missed my point. I realize that my car would not be covered if I were to crash it at the drag strip.

My question is how I should answer the question on the form as to whether or not I will race it? If I say yes, will they not insure me?

fstfish66 - I've already talked to Brad at Grundy. I don't know if those guys work on commission or not. If so, I wouldn't want to talk to Chuck and have Brad lose out on any commission after already spending time with me on the phone. Doesn't seem right to me.

They quoted me $246 a year for $15k replacement value and $500k liability.

ok i have never met or talked with brad,,so stay with him since you have already started your deal,,,and i would answer NO,, i dont race this car,,your not going to call them if you wreck it at the track,,so why get in to that conversation,,,it may put you in a different catogory if any at all

Does your car have to be or look finished?

Answer the questions truthfully or you could be charged with insurance fraud.

I had a long talk with the folks at Grundy last fall. My car is a good weather daily driver from late March through the first time they salt the roads in November or December. I told them I was looking for agreed value without the driving restrictions of daily use. I told them that I wasn't concerned about a low price and was quite willing to pay the same premium as a new car of equal value. They told me they weren't licensed to sell general use auto insurance. They said they would look for a company that would sell a general use policy with agreed value but they never got back to me.

I have talked to local agents that sell Grundy or one of the other collector car insurances and they tell me not to worry about it but I am quite sure they will have a convient memory if something happens and its not covered.

At this point i keep it insured on the same policy with my other cars. I may not have collision or theft coverage that will replace the car but at least if i hurt someone else or damage property I am covered.

as far as finished,, the cheapest amount they insure for last i heard was 5 grand,,,was costing a guy where i work 96 bucks a year for 5 grand on a 73 road runner,,in unrestored condition,,,,

GRUNDY best deal in town,,for a driver/classic car,,,,

Just tell them you don't race..if you want race car insurance you can get it there are companies out there selling it..

I have my Pro Street Demon insured with Grundy for agreed value. Your form is the standard one. You are NOT covered if you use your car for any of those things listed. I can see that you are wanting to be honest with them and that's really the only way to be. No insurance coverage applies when the vehicle is used for racing, I don't care what company you have. I spoke to them directly on the phone and told them that I have a racing engine for the car and would like to one day take it to the strip. The guy was nice and simply stated that coverage would not apply at that time but would apply to all other times within the guidelines. I'm sure you'll save money with Grundy too. I have zero deductible and it's even covered for bird poop at a value of $60,000 for $428 a year. My everyday driver Dakota Sport cost several hundred more than that! I just hope I never have to collect. Road assistance is also standard in the coverage but I keep AAA Plus. With Grundy, you have to pay up front but not with AAA Plus. That's really important when your ride can't carry any spares, it requires TLC treatment, you are miles from home, and you're not packin' a fat wallet!

Reviving an old thread here..

I finally got my act together and filled out the Grundy form, told them I would take it down the dragstrip once a year and also that I would like to be able to drive it to work occasionally (not every day). I was very specific in my answers and they know it's not my daily driver.

They sent me back a form to sign which states that it will not be used for backup transportation, for errands, or be driven to work or school. It also says that I won't be covered if driven on a racetrack.

That racing part I agree with, but the errands & driving to work part I don't agree with. What if I drive it to the auto parts store?

They want this form notarized, so it seems to me that if I sign it, then I'm not covered if I drive it to work one day and something happens. Seems pretty black and white to me when I think it should be a gray area.

Thoughts?

I can't speak for grundy, but i can for Hagerty.

They will insure projects and unfinished drivers or really whatever you have as long as you send them pics.

They will upgrade your insurance as your project progresses as long as you send pics of the upgrades such as interior work and things you may not have done at the time of insuring.

For instance: I have my cuda insured for a specific amount and they will upgrade my policy once the interior is finished.

They do not really have mileage restrictions but they do want you to limit your mileage which I think we all do anyways.

Hagerty will not insure your car on the drag strip which makes total sense to me.

I had a hard time convicing them my car was not going to hit the drag strip since it looks the part of a drag car, but I assured them it was just for fun on the street and shows, plus who says a drag strip can't have double yellow lines in the middle and a tree at one end?

call grundy, and speak to chuck,,,not one of the others that may answer,,,
altho there is another guy that seems to know whats going on,but i perfer chuck 2nd in command at GRUNDY

if you have ever watched my classic car on speed channel,,,some times they have an interview with JIM GRUNDY, owner of GRUNDY,, things have changed, and you may of gottten an older form, they use to tell you "NOT TO WORK " and chuck would sorta give me a wink,,, now they state " NOT FOR WORK EVERY DAY "....

also GRUNDY was the first i believe to state,,you can drive it any where,,to your friends, car show, cruise nite, just not for every day transportation,,,

they know you wil stop at a store,, or to eat on your way home from an event,,,,all the other classic catr insurers had or have to much fine print,,and dont want you driving any place that you cant be with your car at all times when out of your garage,,,,

no company is going to insure you if you RACE,,,dont even menton it,,not even one time for a time trial,,thats plain stupid to try and get coverage if you race,,,you cant even get life insurance if they know you race,,,

for me and many others,,street rodders GRUNDY is the only classic insurance,, now with towing,,,

they are even insureing new challengers as classics,if you have proof of a daily driver,,, make the calll,,,,not the internet form,,

I have State Farm I think I need to switch to Grundy because I like to take mine out on weekends just because... Jim

lilcuda,
i agree with fstfish66, i have have 3 cars with grungy, they are the best as far as i 'm concerned. they also have a towing agreement should you break down, but we all know mopar's never shut down.
i have been with them at least 15 years.

I have Grundy on three cars. Grundy also covers spare parts, cars undegoing a resto. They will also cover transportation and motels if you brake down on the road and need to tow your car home.

I went with Grundy........from all the comments on this thread sounds like I made a good decision.

Thanks. I called and left voicemail for CHuck yesterday. I haven't heard back from him yet.

Heard many bad things about Haggerty. I went with Grundy. I told them I would drive it to the auto parts store and it was no problem.
