Header Paint

This is hands down the best but not the easiest as far as prep goes . But prep is everything with anything .

They had some spots near the collector that were pitted and surface rust between pipes was the worst of it. The rest was scuffing the original coating really. I spent a week sanding, grinding, and wire brushing. Then went back the day of the first coat to sand any new rust that was trying to start back again and really clean any residue. 2 light coats in as many days and then a final coat after the 7 day cure. The paint recommends a 0.8mm nozzle that requires some babying. Clean up prolly took a 15 minutes per coat and maybe 3 hours at the end. Its therapeutic right? .....

Reviving this old thread, used Rustolium Ultra Silver on a set of Dutra Slant Six Manifolds. The Dutra’s had been High Temp powder coated twice by Indy Powder Coat. The first trial did not last, neither did the second. Maybe it’s just me but I expected a premium high temp powder coat to look like new for more than one season. Especially since I paid for it twice.
So now I am trying the Rustolium Ultra.
Sprayed on easy enough. I let it set overnight then gave it the 450F oven today for a little over an hour. The coating sure looks nice. Will see what time and use does to it.

Only have a year on the headers, but so far so good with VHT.

I had access to a sand blaster, so that and a good wash with acetone was my prep. I used the VHT primer let it cure for a few days and gave it a few heat cycles with a heat gun. Final coat was also "cured" before I installed the headers.
I had fairly low expectations of this working, but figured it was worth a shot. Notice the difference in the finish from the cooled tube vs the one receiving the heat.

Even so-called "high temp" powders can't hold up to exhaust temps. They might be good to 1200 degrees or so but exhaust temps frequently get much hotter, especially at the heads.

It's why most in the industry have gone to ceramic coatings.

I thought I remembered you saying powders couldn't hold up. I almost posted as much in another thread recently, but I kept my trap shut, because I couldn't remember. lol

For what those things cost, those flanges don't look very finished out. No offense.

Yes, and the Dutra’s are heavy. Probably weighs as much as a stock exhaust manifold. On the intake-exhaust and the pipe ends I use Remflex gaskets, never had a sealing issue with those.

The flanges certainly have a lot of sealing area. You gotta give um that. lol

I have used Por15 high temp exhaust coating for years on the exhaust systems of Vw based off-road cars. It takes a beating and takes about three years before it needs to be repainted. Regular high temp rattle can paint has never lasted very long.

I have some manifold gray por15 but decided to go with headers. You’ve used it on headers? How is it holding up?

This is the best stuff I have used so far. Sand Blast your manifolds and then 2 coats of this product. No special base coats needed at all. Stays on, does not rust sitting over the winters.

Even works good on rusty tail pipes if you clean them up first.
I’d be curious to see how they’d do on headers. I did some Bill Hirsch a few years ago on manifolds and they have some flaking.

OK...i've tried a few.The best i found was Cast Blast and it needs a hi heat clear coat...then i tried Calyx and never looked back. It's a graphite paste and works good. After time touch ups are easy.
Calyx on headers?

Calyx is a graphite paste and no i have not used it on headers...only manifolds.
A local builder told me he coats all his stock car clients headers with graphite.
