Headers vs 340 manifolds

A stock 340's components were well matched and made for a great street performer.

I put long tube Hedmans on the 360 in my D200, the stock manifolds were cracked to hell and leaked really bad (noisy). I wanted to see if it would make a difference and they were affordable. Already had true dual exhaust. Sure enough, throttle response improved and needed less throttle for the same acceleration as before. WOT performance didn't improve much thanks to the stock 2-bbl cam but there were still noticeable gains. On a truck that does truck stuff (towing and hauling) extra part-throttle performance is nice to have.
 
My experience matches 318willrun. I've put cheapy headers on at least 3 stockish 318-powered vehicles and I've never failed to have a noticeable seat-of-the-pants improvement. The only reason I don't have headers now is that I'm cheap and I'm tired of having to worry about smashing the low-hanging cheapies.
 
Do you plan on any future up grades ?
If so having a good exhaust will generally help with them, if no, headers is still an improvement but is it necessary? worth it? Debatable and up to you to decide.
 
I get extrude hone if money is no object and every last hp is important like some highly competitive race classes are but can't see it to be worth it for 99.9% of builds.
 
340s are rated 324 nhra stock
You know better then using 275 thats a bs rating even dantheman knows that.

What about higher numbers at higher rpm’s?
Change the distributor? Coil? Wires? Change the timing around? Cam timing straight up or moved around?

Come on now. We know we can shoot holes through this garbage like shooting 273 & DtM in a 55 gallon drum tied together tight.

A 20-25 hp having from headers alone is a fair statement. More is possible.
The dyno pull is right in front of you its 17 hp on a stock motor
35 40 on a built motor 70 on a stroker its all been tested

Magazine test? LMAO! Those numbers will differ from dyno to dyno. State to state. Day to day. Sea level to mile high.
Been there done that with flow benches, friends with there engines have dyno’d them at 3 different shops on my old stomping grounds with wild variations in power and weird looking graphs.

This isn’t going to be a dick swinging contest on ridiculous old information on old dyno’s from decades ago and even more so considering the better equipment available today.

Like I said, when you build your first engine, let us know.
Experience is a wonderful thing. Go experience building your own engine. There you will learn something. After your umm-teen-th engine, you’ll know who knows and be able to spot a mound of BS a mile away.

It definitely something that happens. I use my phone for FABO a lot and between my grammar, small keyboard, and the stupid autocorrect I’ll send one that makes no sense sometimes. I “try” to read every submission one more time before posting.
