Headers vs. Exhaust Manifolds ~ 'Let The Debate Begin'

Pishta

Don't forget the 'Shackles'.

'Shackles' were worth 2/10's, as long as you were heading down-hill.

Weight-Transfer.

Dude, I had 4" shackles on that car, AND Gabriel Hi-Jacker air shocks! I had to have them to keep the fenders off my 10" wide Pos-A-Traction tires. They stuck out about 2 inches...I didnt have shock extenders on them either and whenever I went over train tracks, it sounded like the extended shocks were going to rip the floor mounts out. Good times !:cheers:

GM 350 was rated 330 at 5300? And the 340 was pushing 297 WITH headers at 5300? Man, what were we missing?

Pishta,

The 1971 Z-28 Camaro with the 350/330 HP Engine had a few more
'Bells and Whistles'.

~ OK Kustom Headers ~

Part 1

Founder ..... R.E. 'Bob' Ogorek
Year........... 1949
Location ..... Flint, Michigan

They started out as a Custom Car Shop in Flint, Michigan

Within a few years, they started to produce 'custom equipment' for
Performance cars.

They were re-named ...... 'Kustom Equipment Company"

Then they started to fabricate 'custom headers' in their shop.

Business 'boomed', and in 1963 they opened up a new 'State-of-the-Art'
shop, with a manufacturing facility to produce OK Kustom Headers, and other
custom performance car products.

And as a new 'twist' they started to show up at the Drag Strips with a
Truck equipped with a portable-welder and tubing-bender.

Right at the Drag Strip, they could fabricate 'custom' Headers.

'OK Kustom Headers' guaranteed a {-.010} 1/10th 'quicker' Elapsed Time with
their 'custom' Headers over the ones you were using.

If you couldn't go faster with their Headers, they would give you the Headers for 'Free' {Money Back Guarantee}.

The Catch Phrase ........ "Bolt-on-a-Tenth"

This was a 'brilliant' marketing angle, especially at the surrounding Drag Strips
in Michigan.
* Detroit Dragway {Detroit, Michigan}
* Milan Dragway {Milan, Michigan}
* US 131 Dragstrip {Martin, Michigan}
* Tri-City Dragway {Saginaw, Michigan}
* Motor City Drag Strip {New Baltimore, Michigan}

'OK Kustom Headers' soon had large billboards at each of these Drag Strips,
advertising their products and 'Header' guarantee.

They 'specialized' in building {fabricating} custom Headers for Gasser's,
Roadster's, and the Altered's.

Big tube pipes, with customized mandrel-bends.

^^^^ Great idea! First, I have ever heard of this.

A-Body-Bomber,

I knew you would appreciate that early stuff.

'Kustom Headers'

The '1st' Header Company to produce the 'Side-Winder Headers' for the
1965 Corvette with the 396 Big-Block.

Part #1569
* Primary Tubes ...... 2 1/8" {O.D.}
* Gauge ................. 16 {.065"}

* Collector Size ....... 3 1/2" enlarging to 4"

They beat 'Hooker Headers' to the punch in 1965, and took their lunch on
that one.

If you had a 'Big-Block' Corvette, it was 'Kustom Headers' all the way.

Kustom Equipment Company

In 1966, General Motors engaged in a contract with 'Kustom Equipment Company'
to fabricate 'special' Headers for the 'Special Order Option' for the 1967 Z-28 Camaro.

This deal continued in 1968 as well.

Where a customer could 'special order' a set of 'OK Kustom Headers' in the trunk
of the Z-28 Camaro.

The {Z-28-2} 'Header Option' from Chevrolet was priced 'crazily' at;
* Dealer Cost ...... $582.40
* Retail Cost ....... $779.40

Through Chevrolet, the OK Kustom Headers had a 'special'
General Motors Part# stamping on the Header-flange, and a 'KH-37' also
stamped on the flange.

As what was 'typical' back then, the Chevrolet Headers were priced
'at a lower cost' than the Mopar Headers.

Mopar Headers
Small Block ......... $200+

Those Bastards.........

OK Kustom Headers

According to General Motors {Marketing and Advertising}.

The installation of the 'RPO Z-28-2' Headers on the 1967 Z-28 Camaro
unleashed another {+25 Horsepower}.

1967 NHRA

While the 1967 Z-28 {302} was listed as having 290 Horsepower,
those in the 'know' knew that the 'high-winding' short-stroke
Chevy Small-Block was pushing out much more than that.

This placed the 'very light' 1967 Z-28 Camaro {#2955 lbs.} in
B/Stock > {9.50 to 10.59 Wt/HP}
with the 'new' Plymouth GTX 440 and Dodge Coronet R/T 440.
