I turn the key on and the temp gauge ( car is cold) past 250 and the gas gauge is at past full when I only have five gallons in it and then there is the burning smell where would I start?
what car it is would go a long way... I do assume by the problem it has a rallye dash as this is common failing to it and by the other post yesterday stating you had three posts on the back of the fuel gauge. The rallye dash fuel gauge has the voltage limiter built inside of it. When the limiter goes bad it sends battery voltage to all gauges save the amp gauge. All the gauges peg and quickly burn up the insulation on the nichrome wire (that is what you're smelling). You will need to replace the gauges or have them rebuilt and eliminate the internal voltage limiter for an external. Try contacting redfish PM on here and he should be able to help you with repairing your guage(s). http://www.demonivr.com/Chrysler Rallye Gauges.html
I would disconnect the round plug in the back of the dash to try and preserve what maybe left of the guages. There is a bi-metal strip that the nichrome wire is wrapped around so killing the over volt issue now may preserve the bi-metal from being destroyed rendering the gauges un-rebuildable.
then you maybe lucky, the voltage limiter is separate from the gauge. I would still disconnect to avoid further damage to the gauges and replace the limiter. It is a plug in style and can be had at nearly any part store.
borg warner part number R307.
only one way to find out for sure and it would need to be replaced anyhow so you may as well just replace it and see. It is possible it lost its ground and went open, but I wouldn't gamble on that with a sold car. just replace it and confirm a good ground before re-installing the cluster if you need to pull the cluster at all.
what pin and what color is the ground wire on the car and arnt the fuel and the temp senders a resistor or potentiometers or something like that so don't they act as the ground
the limiter has a ground terminal on it and the cluster grounds to the dash frame. While I think the ground issue is further fetched from it having a bad limiter. But the PCB and limiter could have corrosion on it keeping it from getting a proper ground.
roughly - the limiter sends 5.5 volts to the gauges. the gauge has an insulated nichrome wire wrapped around a bimetal strip. The nichrome wire heats up depending on the resistance from the sending units. The bi-metal bends from this resistance generated heat and moves the needle which is connected to the bi-metal. all senders do need a ground to function, but with all gauges inop it is not likely that problem.
You might replace that limiter from underneath. I don't even try.
If you try.. You need to be aware of the noise suppression capacitor. It has a short black lead on it with a male spade terminal.
It is in the same female slot with the 12 volt spade terminal of the limiter.
Some will state "You don't need it, just toss it"
To leave it out can cause loose / intermittent connection to the limiter. To put it in the wrong slot can cause various problems including breaking the circuit board.
Hope this helps
