So after lots of thought and research i have narrowed my search to these rims: the Foose Classics Nitrous II. this is a rough look of them on my car:

Im going to go with 17's all the way around. My question is, how big of a tire can i fit front/back with a stock 73 duster?? I have no clue as far as what backspacing or thickness of tire i can run,i would like to try and get the biggest tire i can get in the back, and something that looks about right in the front. Help is appreciated

thanks

17" tires that = stock height.

315-35-17
265-40-17 (just under)
275-40-17 (Just over)
235-45-17 (just under)
245-45-17 (just over)
215-50-17 (just under, front)
225-50-17 (just over, front ?)

Front is limited you will have more options for the rear.

225-50-17 front and 275-40-17 rear would look sweet if you can pull it off.

215-50-17 front with 245-45-17 rear would be the safe way to go.

First off thanks for that info, second forgive my lack or knowledge on the subject and the stupid question im about to ask... With the tire size out of the way what would be the best looking rim i can shove under it, My options are:

size bolt circle backspacing min/max backspacing

17x7 Custom ? 3.75" - 4.00"

17x8 Custom ? 3.75" - 5.25"

17x10 Custom ? 3.75" - 7.25"

thanks once again...

Go to a tire/wheel store that sells a lot of aftermarket wheels. They should have a tool that can measure what will fit BEFORE you buy it. Too many people buy then complain that they don't fit.

This is a handy site.

I just put some 295/45/ZR18s on my cuda. Those suckers are squeezed in there. From my previous wheel purchase, it is better to have a little too much backspacing than not enough. The lower number of backspacing you go, the further twords the 1/4 panel they go. The higher, the deeper. Here is what i would do...

I put 275/60/15s on my 74 duster for kicks. Used my cuda rims that had 3.75" backspacing. the rims were 15x8 with stock leaf springs. I would say they 'fit' if you ran some super stock springs. or else the lips on the 1/4s would need to be rolled just a hair so no interference.

If i were given that information, since cars vary from one another, and i wanted 17"wheels. I would go with a 17x8, 4" backspacing, a 275/50/17 tire on the back (comes out to the same as a 275/60/15). And then more than likely might need, 1/4" or 7/16" spacer and mayyyybe the lips of the 1/4 panel rolled some.

I am a big fan of big wheels on our cars. However, my personal pet peeve with them, is you have nice fancy 17" wheels...with tires that are about 25" tall. That end up looking teeny in the wheel wells. On my car, i went with the most i could get. 295 is a pretty good tire on stock wells for a ebody. Its tall and wide, fills up the wells nicely. You can use that program to help give you a rough idea with the tires you already have on there. Plug those in there, and start playing with 17s and see how much wider/taller you can go..

And for tire height comparison. Here is a set of 26" tall tires. My 295s are 28". It will make a dramatic change in how your brand new set of wheels looks on your car....2" can make or break ya. lol :D

I like my wheel openings to just cover the tops of my tires. This is a personal thing. I agree that you don't want to end up with a big gap between the top of the tire and the wheel well lip.

You have 2 ways to go here........

Taller than stock tire

or....... and what I do..............

Stock tire height and adjust the (body) ride height to get the look.

For me it was flip the front, rear spring hangers and adjust down the torsion bars.

With a 17" rim you can run more backspacing than stock up front than a 15" rim. This will allow you a wider tire and rim. 17x8 245/45/17 with 5.5 backspacing should be safe up front if you want a wider tire and more grip up front.

Check the Tire and Rim combo section of this website and look at Clair Davis's setup.

There are some that run 275/40/17 with around 5.5 backspacing with 17x9's on the front of 67 Valiant and 69 Barrcudas. Those have the front bottom edge of the fender cut back about 3/4"wx2"h triangle in the corner.
