Honing Oil Options?

I believe I have used brake fluid in the past for honing lifter bores and maybe cylinders. Since I believe brake fluid may soften the RustOleum red primer I used on the cylinder block, I am looking for some other lubricant. Thank you.

How much material are you removing?

In a pinch I’ve used solvent. That’s a bottom of the barrel choice but it’s a step up from dry honing.

I’ve used ATF, Marvels Mystery Oil and even WD-40 if it was just a slight touch up.

If you have to remove more than about .001 I’d let someone with a power hone do it.

You will generate a bunch of heat trying to take more than that by hand.

Just buy some honing oil, your parts store should have some. I don’t like using penetrating oils, fumes.

I'm on a tight budget and have some Generic ATF in the garage so I'll probably try to use that first. Thank you for the suggestions.

Where are you planning to end up with piston to wall clearance? Or is this just a quickie hone and throw back together deal?

Just a quick hone to seat new rings and clean surface rust from lifter bores.

Just use some wd40 or similar
