Year' ago I thought I did the same. But the mechanical spring on these don' allow that.
sounds like he's past that and wants to take the rod and spring out of the inner can...Did you remove the nut and washer from the piston shaft? From there you should be able to pull it apart. If it is a little stuburned, put a small scissors jack or friction jack in between the two flanges and give it some pressure.

From there cut the piston to half it's length. And slide it back into the outer sleeve and weld it upsounds like he's past that and wants to take the rod and spring out of the inner can...
Why couldn't you cut the end of the inner can off then remove the spring, slide it back into the outer can and tack It back to outer can? Seems like a lot of work for nothing the other way.From there cut the piston to half it's length. And slide it back into the outer sleeve and weld it up
