About ten years ago I bought a used engine from an acquaintance intending to put it in my car, then to have it rebuilt in a year or two. We'll, I put it in my car and that was about it... here I am ten years later with the same un-rebuilt engine. I'm finally thinking about doing some upgrades and I want to know what parts I have before I swap them out for something else.

Can anyone tell me what year / car / engine this intake manifold and carburetor would have originally come on? The manifold is an Edelbrock Torker 340. The carburetor is a Carter 625 "competition series". I have included some pictures below.

Thanks!

They are aftermarket parts and would not have come on any engine from the factory.

The Carb is an ok piece but that intake would make a better door stop.

Carb number is on lower left of base plate. I bet it says 9636S. Pretty much the same as an Edelbrock 1406. Great street carb, maybe a bit small for a built 340.

The intake is a Edelbrock Torker II. It won't make the power of a Victor Jr, and wont have the throttle response of a Performer RPM. Not a bad intake, but there might be better designs for your application.

What upgrades did you have in mind? What's your combo now? Cam, compression, converter, gears, etc...

The intake, is an older design Edelbrock that was ment for light competition. IF your going to use it, it works best with a high gear ratio and stall converter and large-ish street cam. I would use it with a cam of 240* duration @ 050 at a min. and a converter of 3500 min and 4.30 gears.

Otherwise, a RPM would be much better to use.

The carb is a small CFM and is best sutied on a 340 if it is gong to be a daily driver. A serious go around town car. It's not a proper match for that intake and even more so on a 340. Though that doesn't me it can not be made to function. It's just out of balance.

Yup, it is a Torker 1 and I've always thought it was junk. Thanks for confirming! Interesting that it is an aftermarket piece... I always assumed that since it has "340" on the manifold it was a factory piece.

My car is a cruiser... "A serious go around town car". I enjoy tons of power as much as the next guy, but I won't be racing the car and I don't have the money or need for a 400 HP build.

The engine is a 318 (I'm told it is .030 over) with small valve J heads, and headers. It has a mystery cam, but whatever it is it sounds reasonably aggressive for the street. I can still idle at 800 RPM, but it's good and lumpy. Rear end is a 3.23 sure grip. I won't be getting a new motor and I won't be changing the gear in the rear end any time soon, so I have to work with what I have. The transmission is a POS 904 from an '83 Fifth Avenue. It has a mechanical lock up converter which is great for the long highway trips, but the stall speed is about 2000 RPM. I will be upgrading the transmission soon after I do the intake & carb. Being the thrifty kind of guy I am (read: cheap) I want to burn it out before I replace it. Also, if the transmission is toasted it makes it makes it that much easier to get the upgrade past the gatekeeper. (She doesn't really mind when I spend money on the cars, but I've noticed that whenever I do an upgrade there's some purse or pair of shoes or whatever that she just must have and can't live without. I can usually do a repair without having to fork out some cash for her nonsense as well.) So let's assume I have a 727 trans with a stall speed around 2600 RPM.

I always felt that the intake was limiting me... I know it is a single plane unit and when you combine that with my relatively low gear ratio and crap transmission, the car doesn't do much in the first 40 feet. Once the revs get up to about 3000 all hell breaks loose, but I'm a low end kind of guy. I'm looking to put on an intake and carb that will maximize my bottom end torque. Is the performer RPM my best bet?

VIA your description, a Regular Performer would be what your looking for.

But I have to ask, what is the plan for the engine/car? Where do you want to end up with it all when your done?

The car is intended to be a cruiser with some extra jam. I might take it to the track occasionally just to see how fast it is, but not to competitively race. If it ran a low 14 I'd be happy.

Hum, OK. My 318 in a '74 Duster is a high 14 car once I tune it up better. I ran a 15.14 with the carb untuned and the distibutor just simply dropped in.

It has the same carb you have, Edelbrock LD4B, the "318" intake before the Performer, headers and 2-1/2 true dual exhaust and a small Crane cam. @ .050, 216/228 - .454/.480 on a 112.
A 904 trans, stock and 3.21 rear gears on a stock tire.

You can get low 14's with the slightly larger cam ( 230 @ .050 ) and better compresion than a stock '78, 318 has. For the heads, leave the 360 heads alone. You'd probably like preped 318 heads better, but the stock 360 heads should do fine.
Being the gear ratio is numericaly low, a MSD would be very good for low end power and mileage.

I say either a Performer and a Thermoquad or a LD4B and a 570 Street Avenger.

Thanks to everyone for the help on this. I like to make upgrades in small increments, so at first I'll probably find a new intake and use my existing carb. Then I'll get myself a new carb and see how things go.

Anyone notice the fuel inlet is on the wrong side of the carb ?

They are pretty good. Pretty much a LD340 with 318 sized ports. I bet they are better then the Performer.
