has anyone had experience with edelbrock manifolds and carbs? i was told they are better than the thermo quad because they dont have the plastic body to warp or crack, but on the down side being square bore, they dont have the larger secondaries to give it the extra kick when they kick in like the thermo quad. i have gotten used to mechanical secondaries, but am wondering if there is something better. i have only run thermo quads and mopar intakes, and they have done ok, but i havent gone outside that area much. i have a 1973 duster with a 340 is gonna be a street machine, stop light race once in awhile, thats about it. i have an 8 3/4 3.23 rear end which is in the car, and a 4 speed or 727 i can choose from at home. any ideas on sticking with the thermo quad or going with something else......mechanical secondaries, vacuum secondaries, spread bore, square bore, etc. i know your carb (mechanical or vacuum) and intake should be suited to what tranny and rear end you run, but given the application and its use, my parts i have at home, what do you guys think would be a good combo? thanks!

From the box, the Edelbrock will make your eyes burn. Go on-line, d/l the good instructions, play with the step springs, and they work great.

Edy , easy to work on ,tune , parts available almost everywhere , thermoquads are very good but harder to find parts .

you guys ever have the plastic on thermo quads warp like i have? just want something reliable. only thing that makes me hesitant on edelbrock is my buddy had a performer carb, performer rpm intake, and the secondaries didnt even open more than 3/4 the way. but i suppose that is dependent on how much vacuum the engine loses, and may vary from engine to engine depending on how much fuel the engine calls for. his obiviously didnt need all the fuel that the secondaries provided. i just like the mechanical secondaries cuz i can control them on my own with the gas pedal, but maybe there is something better out there. i just dont have all the money in the world to try carb after carb and intake after intake on a trial and error basis.

ive seen them warp but only on stock smog stuff. if your manifold is running hot enough to warp one of these things you got something wrong. if the manifold gets that hot your killing power huge also.

Then some Holley if you don't like a TQ or Edy . They are also easy to rebuild with lots o parts available .
Used a few Theromoquads and never had the plastic warp , and the secondaries not opening on the edy , well something was not set up properly .
Any of the mentioned carbs set up properly are good choices , they all work well , each one has their strong and weak points . You have to decide which you can live with .
As for intakes have used a Holley performer on a 318 that worked well , ld -340 that was very good and now have Edy Air Gap . Air gap has no choke so there is that , though I have never had a problem starting car without a choke . Think the Air-gap is the one to get these days , but if money is tight any alu dual plane would do for the street .
