The challenge in your case is what ever was done doesn't work. (I understand knowing the right way helps, just saying that's not what you've got to solve here).Do you recall which wires you splice the newer style VR plug into?
Im trying to back track someone elses handiwork.
IMO you're going to have to do some unwrapping.
I would also disconnect the battery, and then use an ohmmeter or continuity tester to check these.
Need to find three connections that would have been neccessary to use a ground controlling regulator (triangular connector).
1. Regulator sensing wire.
2. Feed for the field (goes to one field terminal).
3. Switched ground for the field (connects to the lower pin on the VR)
4. Feed for ECU's power. (not directly related but you might as well know what they did)
