Is/was there ever a 340 Magnum

-
Again...

70-74 HP Challengers had badges that said "Four Barrel"- 440, 383, 340, 360.

71-74 HP Chargers had badges that were the same style but larger and said "Magnum"- 440, 383, 340, 360.

Super easy to prove.

I also misspoke when I said 340 Darts, Demons and Dart Sports had Magnum badges.

AFAIK they only had "340" badges.

Sorry.

Feathers ruffled.

Now unruffled.

Do we need a group hug? With some Diddy baby oil?

If OP Brooks James is referring to the actual engine specs.....There was only one version of a 340 for each respective year, no different specs (except 1970 340-6 in T/A and AAR E-bodies). "FOUR BARREL", "MAGNUM", it was all marketing. MAGNUM was a Dodge thing, just like Dodge & Plymouth each had their own name for high impact colors even though they were the same and Plymouth E-body hood emblems were "'cuda 340".

RustyRatRod, YY1 & 1WildRT got the application details pretty well outlined.

Some confusion may have come from the fact that early Challengers were available with different versions of a 383 including the HP Magnum version. I'm sure 331IMP's friend has a 340 FOUR BARREL emblem if it's original.

340 Magnum would be a Dodge only name.
My best friend has a A66 340 Magnum 70 challenger. Not an R/T, but it has a 340 Magnum emblem on both sides of the hood, and a 340 magnum pie pan on the aircleaner.

It is.... and it does.

The "340 MAGNUM" hood emblems were part #3573632 and used only on the 1971-'73 Charger and '71 Super Bee. There are similar Charger-specific 383, 400, and 440 Magnum emblems from 1971-'74. In 1974, the 360 Charger's hood emblems said only "MAGNUM" with no displacement callout while 400 and 440 cars still spoke of their cubes. Plymouth B-bodies exclusively used displacement decals in the same years, with 1973-'74 440 Road Runners having a small metal "GTX" below the 440 decal on the hood.

The Challenger R/T's "383 MAGNUM" (1970-'71) and "440 MAGNUM" ('70 only) emblems are considerably smaller than the '71-up Charger parts as well as the Challenger's Hemi and Six Pack emblems. Early 1970 340 Challengers (A66) had "340 FOUR BARREL" hood decals, while later-production '70 and all 1971-'73 340 Challengers used similar-looking metal emblems. 1974 Challengers used a "360 FOUR BARREL" emblem what-fer there warn't no 340 no mo'.

Some confusion may have come from the fact that early Challengers were available with different versions of a 383 including the HP Magnum version. I'm sure 331IMP's friend has a 340 FOUR BARREL emblem if it's original.
Non-R/T 1970-'71 Challengers had a "383 FOUR BARREL" emblem on the fender rather than the hood.

Air-cleaner paraphernalia, be it a pie tin or decal, said "340 FOUR BARREL" on everything except Six Pack/Barrel engines, what with the obvious difference in venturi population 'n' stuff.

Four letters?
Probably nothing more than a badge in many cases, IIRC was there was a 440 magnum, that had heads with a larger intake valve, vs the first castings

I'm pretty sure not many people knew about the small increase in the intake valve. ,but the moniker 440 Magnum stuck.

Other actual mods to distinguish themselves 340/440 six pack, Trans Am, exhaust manifolds, camshafts, etc, all factory pieces

It appears for the most part that the Magnum logo presented the engine as "superior" in nature, while not actually being so
Except, referring the info on the past paragraph

so the cool badging was basically no more than eye candy (noting the exceptions)and a way to ramp up sales,
