ok so i came across an 29 spline, 8.25 rear end, with disc brakes, and 3.55 gears off of a jeep cherokee for sale. anyone have any idea if this would fit on an abody?

would have to be 51" wide from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface right?

anything other thoughts? thanks

as far as I know, they will work - I've been looking for one. Thing is, they're wider than the stock a-body rear. IIRC, they're about 60 inches or so wms to wms. You would also probably have to move the spring perches and shock mounts. If you don't want it, I might be interested, for the right price. If its out of a Grand Cherokee, make sure its not the aluminum housing dana 44, because it would be weaker than the a-body 8.25. Another direction to look is an 8.25 out of a v6 4x4 or v8 Dakota, as thay're a little narrower. Although unless it has the optional 3.55 or 3.93 gears, it will have the 3.21 with or without the posi. The 4 cylinder and v6 2wd usually have the 7.25, so make sure about what you're getting.

I wasn't aware that rear disc were available on Cherokee - know they had them on the Liberty (my 07 has them). Wonder how hard it would be to use the rear disc set-up off a Liberty and/or Cherokee on an A Body 8 & 1/4 or 8 & 3/4.

In 92 the Dakota went to a 6 lug wheel so unless you are prepared to swap axles and brake drums you will want to look for a Dakota older than 92.

Also, the stock rear gear ratio on a 4x4 Dakota is 3.55.

well i already had passed on it but when i did talk to the guy and it was 60 inches wms to wms. it had an upgrade kit to a disc brake conversion setup. i just didn't want to go throw the work to either cut it down or find different rear wheels to make it work. thanks for the replys though.

Dartman, Jeep Grand Cherokees between 94 and 98 had the rea disc brake setup, many, if not all of which came on the aforementioned aluminum dana 44, which is nothing more than a glorified dana 35c. As far as I know, the only modifications for them to fit our 8.25 rearends is to grind the caliper bracket so it fits around the axle housing. everything else is bolt on. You may have to work a little bit with the e-brake cables though, but that's no biggie. I'm going to include some links, if FABO will let me. There should be more than enough information on here to get you headed in the right direction. I'm planning on this disc brake swap myself, just because I want to. But first, I have to get the rearend built up to something better than the peg-leg 2.45:1 I have now. I'm not certain if there is room to redrill the dakota axles for our 5x4.5 bolt pattern, but if you can, you can use the stock drums from any 8.25, possibly even the 8.75. Someone can chime in and correct me if that last part is wrong. Anyway.. here are the links.

There is loads of information on the net on the brake swap, just do a search and check out a few jeep sites, its most popular among off road jeepers.
