John Madden just checked out

Copied from a search.
Madden’s 103-32-7 record gives him a career winning percentage of 75.9%, which is the all-time record with a minimum of 100 wins. Legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi is in second place, at 73.8%. Unsurprisingly, the active leader in winning percentage is Belichick, but there is virtually no chance of him catching Madden.

Madden had a WICKED sense of humor. He told this story on one of his Bay Area sports talk shows:

During a baseball strike/lockout in the 1980s he was golfing with a few baseball players. At the first tee he told them that they needed to make the round "interesting". He said, we'll play full-contact golf. Puzzled, the players asked what he meant. He told that when they would address the ball to hit it, he would blindside tackle them...

He quit coaching due to his fear of flying, which he would have to do to get to any games any distance from Oakland. Truly a great guy.

From the documentary last night, they played an interview with him. He simply stated that he won the superbowl, so mission accomplished. Onto something new.
Impressive for sure, but still not a record. Maybe he had the highest career winning percentage?

Any idea why he quit coaching?

Maybe that was the inspiration for this. One of my all time favorite commercials.

This is great, on Letterman in 1983.

From the web: He was emotionally stressed and burned out. Madden had a bleeding ulcer and a strained relationship with his sons which he wanted to repair.

Also, he refused to fly because of being claustrophobic. He had a meltdown the last time he ever flew.
Started travelling by train and then by motorhome (the "Madden Cruiser") which I'd rather do myself - much better way to see the country. The first 'bus' the network rented for him was Dolly Parton's tour bus.

The Madden Cruiser was sponsored by Walker Exhaust for a bit in the '90s.

Me and a buddy were talking about him 2 nights ago. Wow just weird. He was such an integral positive influence on every aspect of football.
I grew up watching him coach the Raiders, then onto broadcasting, then his All Madden Teams and video games. Decades of football greatness.
RIP John and thanks.

John and Pat are together once more.

I loved him in the beer commercials. Heck , loved them all. "All we need is 1 pin, Rodney! Ha, piece of cake!..."

When Madden went from CBS to Fox Sports, he commanded a salary that was higher than any NFL player at that time. That says a little about his worth. Also noteworthy is that Madden was the only color commentator in televised sports history who kept viewers watching the game even if the game was a blow out or a stinker. There is no one today like that, nor was there anyone before him. His football IQ was through the roof, but it would have been wasted were he not genuine, honest and comfortable in his own skin. And he wasn’t big on rules. He only had three. Show up on time (that shows respect), listen and play your *** off on Sunday. NFL executives, coaches, GM’s, scouts and more would call Madden for advise on any number of subjects, football and non football related. Even to the end of his life. That is how GIANT his intellect was. RIP John Madden.
