Just a 284-484?

The 284 hydraulic was actually one of the best old 340 cams when used with 10 to 1 or more compression. the cam is only as good as the rest of the parts supporting it as mentioned! It can be ran into the 12s in a 3200 lb car successfully if you're needing to go faster than that it's probably time to step up to a solid.

ran 13.18 at 108 with that cam,LD340,3310 Holley,1-3/4" headers,3.23 gear,4-speed and 7" x 27" cheater slicks. woulda been quicker with 25.5/26" slicks, but for $100, I used what I had. short block was stock rebuilt 68 340. oh, electronic ignition, solid wires and stock coil.

perfect example that car would have had a set of 4.10s it probably easily would have broke into the twelves.

‘68 340 GTS, 284/484, 10.5 to 1, 3 angle, LD340, 3310-2, black jack alumacoat headers, 4 speed, 4.30 gears, 7” slick, 12.96. Gainesville Florida, 1990.

Still have the same car, still have the same cam, some changes but maybe a trip to the track and see how she’s running these days.

That cam takes me back 30+ years!! Was running that cam in a 383 in my 69 Charger back at Quaker City Dragway. 284/.484...it was my first "performance" cam. Stock iron heads w/ a bit of bowl blending, stock 383-2bbl shortblock, a DP4B intake, 750 vac Holley, Hooker Comp headers, and a 4.10 gear in the 8-3/4. 10 TCI converter in the 727 that stalled around 3000 rpm. 26.5" tall slicks, open exhaust. Car weighed (and still does) 4260#'s. Best was a 13.04 at about 104 mph. Shifted it at 6700-6800 or it would slow down! Never did get a 12 sec timeslip!
Ran it that way for many years until the motor got tired and wore the rings out. That's when the 440 went in...with the same heads, a CH4B intake, same carb, dismal 9.2 cr, 292/.509 cam. 12.40-something was its best at around 109.
