Just recieved my dougs d450 headers Wowwww

Plug acess with a wobble Snap-on plug socket is very easy. Kind of a pain in the *** when the motor is hot to get the plug wires off though!
 
I know what you mean. Lot's of high dollar stuff in the Mopar market,but the overall satisfaction isnt that great. Seem's to me there is no dollar value in getting fancy header's,so I bought a scratched up set of hooker's off craigslist for $75! They should fit,seeing how the inner fender's are going by by..
 
The dollar value to me was getting the headers 6 1/2" off the ground and getting access to my spark plugs. My old Hooker aftermarket skid plates hit every dime in the road and the back two plugs were inaccessible. The TTi sit above the centerlink. I haven't scraped them yet and I have driven it on average 5 days a week for 6 weeks.
 
Taking plugs out on a Dougs equipped motor. This is for the D453's that fit 67-76 cars.

No crossover tubes like the hookers/copies.

D450's fit 63-66 correct. no comparisons should be made to the 67-76 headers that dougs produce.
 
Say what do you guys think of the small 2.5 collector on the dougs ?
I plan on 2.5 head pipes > dynomax ultraflo > 2.25 tails .. would there be any gain by loosing the 2.5 collector and adding a 3" instead ??
probally no gain............. because i'm runnibng with 2.5 head pipes anyway.
that 2.5 collector just seems pretty wimpy to me. but if no gain with 3" collector ...... it does matter anyway. just wondering

If you open up the exhaust you lose a little low end torque but gain high end power. I was going to go 1 7/8 headers and 3" exhaust, but I wanted the low end power that this car was built for. I talked with TTi and they said at 650hp and better they recommend 1 7/8 and 3". So, depending on what you are putting out, make your decision accordingly.

As for changing plug's I've always found it easy with a wrench or socket to crack it loose and pop a vacuum hose over the end! Turn's it out (or in) pretty fast.
 
With my Hookers, I couldn't get a wrench on the back two plugs. I would have to pull the motor up, remove the headers, and then change the plugs. I love Hookers, just not Hooker Headers.

Yes needsaresto .. rubber hose always works great for installing the spark plugs .

i think you may have been overthinking that operation slightly, my old hookers sure didnt leave as much space as TTI for changing #5&#7 plugs but it wasnt that bad,i remember two ways much easier than described.

1. put a sparkplugsocket on the plugg from sort of under the headertube and then just put an extension into the socket without seating the extension just using it as a slightly wobbling extension inbetwen the headertube and valvecover,worked great.

2. a cut down wrench under the headertube might have been alitle bent but it worked aswell.


just putting it out there incase someone else has the same problem

well that answers that question about a larger collector I assume too. larger collector may take some torque away.. and 273 's don't have much to begin with LOL. I will leave that 2.5 collector alone then. I'll be running 2.5 head pipes to the muffs anyway. 2.25 tails.

I couldn't get a socket in there. I ground it down little by little until I could squeeze it in, and then it was too short to catch the nut. I hated those Hookers. The headers I mean.
 
I did not modify the cross member for duals, I'm running a single 3-inch system. Today I got it finished up to the tailpipe. It hangs no lower than the factory system and I was even able to reuse the original hanger with a little modification.

As far as trimming the headers, I cut mine up to the flange. I didn't see the point of having the small sections between the ports. Eventually I will trim the gaskets too.

correct .. both dougs headers are totally different . early and late abody

Yes ,,,, that is the way I will cut mine between the flanges .

I have to have dual exhaust though .. love that sound !!

I just finished installing these on my 63. Not a bad install with the steering column, master cylinder, brake lines, distribution block, z-bar and torsion bars all removed.

The passenger side went in easy, but you need to take them apart. I can't imagine not using the 90 degree adapter. Even with the short filter it would be a PITA changing it.

The driver's side is a little rougher, but not too bad. The only contact point I have is the mini-starter and the lip of the frame rail near the control arm mount. I think the normal starter would fit and some minor hammer work to bend up the frame rail lip fixed that.

Wires on the driver's side is another issue.

They are totally bad *** though and worth the work. Too bad I have to pull it all apart for final paint...

fzmax ...... where did you get the black wrinkle finish paint for your valve covers.. They look awesome and very correct ?? or did some company re-store them for you.

Just finished installing the 8 3/4 rearend 3.55 suregrip into the 65 dartcharger ..
Boy......... this is really going to wake that car up ........ wooooooooooooo.
have to get the driveshaft shortened 1.75" tomorrow.
then that's all done and I move up to the front end of the car and install the dougs headers.. build the dual exhaust and then she is done.. time to have some fun for the summer.

got the 8 3/4 rearend installed in the 65 dartcharger .. everything went smooth . even the drivesahft shortened..
all good to go.. took her out for a spin and she ROCKS with that 3.55 suregrip.. squeals the tires at a roll in 1st gear .:burnout::burnout:

Im sure I'll get BOOOOOED off the forum for this but,,, I use the oil filter for a PT Cruiser.
Plenty of clearance. We maintain our cars better than most daily drivers. Most all new cars have tiny filters.The one on my 6.0 liter Chevy motorhome is smaller than the PT's.
The PT Turbo filter is about 2 '' longer.Using them for 5 years now.Just a thought..
 
Ok . well............ back to working on my dougs d450 headers ...
Going to clean up insides the tubes around the welds and prime and paint with heat proof primer and top coat with silver paint . cut the flanges and ready to install.
 
dougs d450 going on my 1965 dodge dartcharger273 4 speed.
8 3/4 suregrip 3.55 gears .
