k so i have a 1971 duster running a slant six i have a 318 and a 360 ariving at my house (needs a rebuild) and i beleve i have a line on a 340 so im thinking the 340 cus of era but can i pull more out of a 360? i dont thinkg so but who knows

Ultimately you could pull more power out of the 360ci just because of the cubic inch. I like the 340; I have one in my demon but it's just not enough power so I'm planning a 360 build. You could stroke the 340 and make killer torque but I don't like those 4inch cranks but that's just me. What are your performance goals? Hp? ET?

The 340 is a great high revving engine but since the 360 has a longer stroke and more cubes it makes a great street engine because of more low end torque. More torque=more fun. This is just my opinion but I like the 360 better for that.

What you can get for hp out of any engine is determined mainly by the induction flow capacity.

Or the amount of money in your pocket.........LOL

Cahrin, welcome aboard.

Like you have heard before, I'm on board with a 360. Plenty around, easy power maker more stroke for torque. Which is great in a street car. Good for track as well. The longer stroke engines make peak torque quicker in the rpm range.

Maybe the determining factor is the condition of both engines- if one needs less work by a significant amount - say 500$ then I'd choose the one needing less work. Ultimately if you want a stroker some time in the future, then save the 340 for that option - you can get slightly more cubes from it than a 360 without having to give up as much boring it, 4.04 vs 4.00, 340 vs 360 respectively.

im looking at making a mean street car withlets be honest some street racing power. its looking positive for my 340 so im thinking of taking that boaring it 30 over as it will proboly need boaring any way putting flat tops in (mabey directional i donno depends on $) porting the heads mabey shaving them and running a good street intake with a holley 4 barrel i am looking at a purpleshaft mopar cam but i donno any sugestions also about the shaving yea or ney?

Theres nothing like the reaction you get when you tell someone ya' its a 340,that is unless you stroke it..go with the 340...

Ok you will probably need to shave the heads some to clean them up but to take a whack off for compression is something I wouldn't do. You will have to sit down and do the math to figure out how much compression you want. Since you said you want flat tops you will have to find pistons that are close to zero deck so you don't have to take much off the deck to achieve zero deck or slightly positive deck. Heads I figure you'll use what you got which probably is X heads. They are great heads and with mild porting will flow very good for 340 cubic inches. They do not have harden valve seats so you need to either replace them or run lead substitute in you gas. I ran it for years and never had a problem and the seats looked great after all those miles. The purple series MP cams are very popular and make good hp but there are more modern designs like comp extreme that will make more power. Intake...air gaps are hard to beat so I would go with that in a heart beat. Carb is up to what you can afford. Vacuum secondaries are cheap but get a double pumper in the 650-750cfm range if you can. Also don't for get headers and some nice 2.5 inch exhaust.

Street car ? 360, KB107 pistons set a zero deck, Good valve job on the heads, CompCams XE268 or equivalent, Eddy RPM or Air Gap intake, Carb of your choice in the 650 to 750 range. 355 or 391 gears.

If you already have the 360 on the way, why bother with the 340? Unless you need a date coded 340 for a clone or #'s car. You can make power with either motor but for practicality purposes, stick with the 360.
