Well this laptop is 6 yrs old now. Ive replaced the hard drive once before. Everynight for the last 5 days I get a warning that the hard drive is failing and I need to have it replaced. Computer locks up at least 5 or 6 times each night and has to be rebooted. So its time for something new. Is it a note pad, IPad or another laptop. Im not a computer savey person but I know I need something with a USB port. So whats the best options out there. Dont really want to spend a lot because its money Im taking from the car resto. Oh I travel almost every weekend so I need to throw it into a case and take it with me so it needs to be tough as well. I dont do gaming or movies. Basically the forums and surfing the web for the car stuff. Maybe would use it to watch MLB baseball!
Thanks
Rod

Hey there, I do this and a bunch of other stuff for a living. Your problem sounds ominous. The short answer for you, and how you use a computer, is to quickly discern the issue, prove its bad, then move on to a new laptop. IPads are great, I'm on one one now, but it's also one of like 4 computers I use. You know the deal, no USB port, etc. there really just for surfing the web, I've had hit and miss even streaming a movie.

Is your current laptop truly dead? Probably. Google the make and model, and how to run a diagnostic test, all laptop manf. Have those tests built in. It'll probably confirm your fears. I will say that I'm not a fan of replacing a perfectly fine computer just due to age though.

The next step is to decide what your budget is. Then go down to Best Buy and others and play with all the new laptops. dO NOT go to Wal-mart!! There not the same laptops inside and will die quickly. Anywhere else, If you fall in love, and it's in your budget, pull the trigger. Beware though, all that Geek Squad **** is bogus and they really just fill your computer with additional software that actually slows and perpetuates issues. So when they pressure you to buy their "protection," tell them to go dig a ditch.

Another option is if your in a big city, find a mom and pop computer store that sells new and used laptops. Believe it or not, their used selection is some of the best deals around. They were probably top of the line computers when new, and certainly worth their time to rebuild for resale. Make sure they offer a warranty. And more times then not, you can talk them down and get a screaming deal.

PM me the specifics and price of any laptop your considering, and I'll tell you whether if it's a rip off or not, if you want a second opinion for that matter. good Luck.

Get a new one while your old one still works a bit. If it crashes you might loose everything on the hard drive. If the motherboard goes south, you can pull the hard drive and operate it with a cable to retrieve the files from the old one.

When it comes to computers you've got a lot of options. I'm a big fan of Macs and its what I use. Macs are great but expensive so I'll suggest a Chromebook.

Like this one:

It's under $300 which won't break the bank, has enough ram (2GB) to do basic things but not enough to play games, 32GB SSD will have fast read and write times and things stored on it will load faster, has 2 usb ports one of which is usb 3.0 which is GREAT and it'll charge stuff fast and any file transfers from a thumb drive to the computer will be lightning fast. It's also got a touch screen if you're into that kind of thing. The only real con with it is that it has no disk drive but that's the way most laptops are heading nowadays. It's small and light and can easily be tossed in a bag when you travel and it'll do everything you mentioned. Picking out computers can be hard since theres so many out there. Hope this helps!

Just for kicks, if you want a Mac this would be a good one: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-macbook-pro-with-retina-display-13-3-display-8gb-memory-512gb-flash-storage-silver/6936626.p?id=1218815254616&skuId=6936626 I love mine and use it every day, fantastic computer!

Depending on what kind of machine you use now, the Mac and Chrome book will be quite different. Chrome runs an obscure OS, with most applications running in the Cloud. Meaning your Office programs AND data will sit on some server in Siberia. Pus they last like 10 minutes before they catch on fire.

This is sort of a religion, so don't banish me, but Mac's are just regular laptops running yet another obscure OS. Apple was getting there face smashed in by Microsoft in the early 2000's, so they quietly abandoned ship on their whole philosophy and started using Intel architectural (the same parts as Microsoft inside.) (Look it up) Macs are great, but twice the price as a Dell, you can't work on them or get replacement parts, and it doesn't "play well" with the rest of the world. Again, people love them, and BlueDream isn't wrong, your just kind of on an island.

The best laptops out for the money are still Dell's. Windows 8 was a big change for MS, but their adding back the Start button very soon.

This is a very personal topic, and I'm sure I'll be hung at the cross here, but good money says stay with the mainstream products. Cheap reliable, and usable.

I've been a long time windows user in addition to using Macs. Windows 7 was great, I can't navigate windows 8 to save my life. It's like they took everything that worked about windows 7 and threw it out the window. I'm running OSX Yosemite on my MacBook and it works well. For me it was much easier to go from windows 7 to Mac OS than to use windows 8. It's like a tablet OS on a laptop and it's just weird to me. Dell does make good computers, so does HP but they're more corporate focused. I've got a Dell Studio XPS and really like it, been going strong for 5 years now and still works great. It also has windows 7 which I like.

People get VERY opinionated on tech, much like cars. There's no real "best" one. It's all about what you like and what works best for you. Upgrading to the latest OS on a Mac is always free and when they roll it out, they do so for all computers that can support it. It's true they use Intel parts, but Intel makes a great product. The built in anti-virus on Mac is also good and I've had no problems so far with viruses on mine but we have had problems on our PC even though we had anti-virus software on it. Compatability between Mac and iPhone is also a good thing if you have both. When i'm doing homework my Mac will forward calls from my iPhone to my computer and I can answer them there, respond to texts, and if i'm out and about it'll even sense that my phone is with me and with one click it'll set up a secure hotspot and connect me to the internet. It's all very streamlined and it's what works best for ME. I don't have a single problem with people not liking them or wanting to use something else. People like what they like.

For bang for your buck, I still think a Chromebook would be good. My mom is a teacher and they use them in their classrooms with good results. If they can stand up to a bunch of 7th graders then they must not be too fragile. I also agree that Dell is a very good option too, but I think windows 7 would be the best OS to use since it's so familiar to most people and is easy to navigate and use. Even though it's getting pretty old there's still TONS of support for it and lot of computers still run it for a reason. It's good. I just don't like Windows 8 at all. I think they're skipping over 9 and going straight to 10 (Maybe because competition with Apple and OS X?) but I could be mistaken, haven't looked into that kind of thing in a while now.

Apple- Expensive but good
Chromebook- Cheap with decent specs
Dell Inspiron- Middle of the road in price, quality, and performance.

Go with an inexpensive tablet, and if you have to get Win8 on it use a program called classic shell.
It makes the menu's and navigation work like Win7 (start button and all)

If you need a CD/DVD drive, get an external for about 50 bucks.

Then with a half decent sized USB stick you have backup abilities.

Done deal for about 300.

(Small, inexpensive, won't kill you financially if it dies, and has everything you need for what you do.)

thanks for all the suggestions. Ive been on line tonight looking at the items from best buy. By chatting with their on line reps I am learning that in order to streamline MLB I am being told I need more memory. They are suggesting an HP, Model: 15-f018dx. The price is not all that bad and it has many features that I could use. its under $400 and only $370 for an opened box? I would need to buy office, and it seems as tho thats a yearly expense! It has a photo program but I wonder if thats just a trial version and I have to pay down the road. Tried to ask that question but now all the online help is busy right now or should I say the last hour! I hate shopping for a computer. Not knowing what I really need. I would have this one fixed but I already replaced this hard drive 2 years ago. Tonight its working like all is good! It must have female hormones because its moody just like the wife! LOL

Look into and consider Open Office from openoffice.org
It's free and can do everything MS Office does, and is MS Office compatible.
(meaning it will open and use current and future MS Office and Excel documents.)

Lenovo or IBM thinkpad T61 R61. You can get them on ebay for like $150 refurbed. They are tanks- not light, not thin, not even pretty, but run great.

Why not get an external hard drive and back up your important info before it crashes???

Then you can transfer it to any other computer....

krazykuda, Ive already done that. I have been backing up my hard drive since the last hard drive crash. So at least my files are safe. last night no issues. So far tonight its operating ok but about every half hour it does not respond then the screen darkens for about 2-3 minutes then the hard drive message comes up. Then its good to go for a while. Thanks for all the suggestions. I hope to resolve this over the weekend.

Well its been over a monrh since I started having problems with this computer. I brought my extra laptop in from the shed that I used for my golf swing practicing but this one is at least 8 years old and its very slow for surfing. So I decided to try a chromebook. I bought the Toshiba Chromebook 2 / Celeron N2840 / 13.3" 1080p / 4GB / 16GB SSD / Intel HD.
I havent received it yet but hoping it shows up tomorrow. I have no experience with this type of computer or the chrome OS operating system and all this cloud stuff but I guess I will learn. I figured I can use this computer if I need a microsoft program such as excel or word until I learn what the programs from the cloud are like and how they operate. Going to be a fun learning experience at my age since I am not computer savy! Hopefully if I need help some of you here at FABO has some knowledge.
Wish me luck

While I have a quad core Gateway desktop, I find myself using my Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 more and more. I got it around Christmas and paid $199.00 for it. It is flat out AWESOME. It also has a micro USB connector and for $17.00 you can order a adapter to connect a standard flash drive. Additionally a Android based tablet plays nicely with a PC whereas a Apple product does not. I have both personal Android devices and a I-Phone 5C as a work phone and I can not tell you the frustration level I have trying to move files between my PC and I-Phone. I know that a lot of people will say that you have to use I-Tunes to do this but with an Android you need nothing. Hope that this helps.

i have several thinkpads, and have had many others, clear back to 2? 386

T520 can be had for about that price and are far far newer and superior to the old T61. Don't get me wrong, T61 were good. T520 is i5 core. came with w7 native. they work great with linux
