look no hands

I just looked at another 400 with the heads off and it looked the same as this one .080 down also are 902 heads any good I found a set that looks to be ported and has been cut in the spring seats and new guides also can see they heave been decked just don't know how much plus a set of unworked 906 heads all for 100 bucks

Rodney has 902 heads on 5300. That's the name of his Grand Fury wagon. It's 5300 pounds and runs 8.40s in the eighth, stock bore and stroke 440 ON MOTOR.....so yeah, 902 heads ain't bad.

ok I'm trying to post some pics of the motor so I can ask a question but I can't find the stupid camera's usb wire so the pic will have to come this afternoon when my daughter comes home.

But I'll ask the question anyway, how far down is a piston in the bore of a 400 because this motor the pistons are flat with no valve relives and at TDC this piston is around .080 down, is that about right or has something been done???

I've busted apart about 1/2 dozen OEM 400's and I've never seen one that had pistons with valve reliefs. That looks like the OEM piston. And .080 down is probably about average. I've recorded them at .065 all the way to .110 down according to my notes. (Mopar QC spec in the 70's was "give or take 1/2"...LOL)

Good news is it's pretty cheap to do a 451 with a turned 440 crank, LY rods and a shelf piston.

Looks like you've got a deep pan if the .509 is good, run it! Right conveter and gears and hooking up that cam in a 451 will go into the 10's if not real, real close.

Welcome, hooks! Keep us posted. I LOVE this thread ! ! !

Oh, PS: I've got a good buddy that goes 10.30's @ 130 @ 3400# with home ported 902 heads. So I think they'll be good. As cast, they flowed very, very close to an OEM 906 head.

That's a pretty fair deal. BUT...find a good head guy local and pay the minimal mount to have the ported heads pressure tested and flowed for the data. It's easy to break through the intake ports if you have a heavy hand on the grinder/don't know where to NOT port. "Porting" is not always good, depending on who did it and what they did. It's real easy to screw up a set of 902/906/452 heads. Don't ask me how I know...LOL!!

Case in point: You will find more ET/MPH gain in the low and mid lift numbers rather than being weak down there with "impressive" peak flow numbers...

Hey Hooks, you can do an el cheapo combustion chamber cc with a turkey baster,a flat chunk of plexiglass with a hole drilled in it and some alcohol with a bit of red food die in it.If your carefull you can get a pretty close guess at the cc of the chamber, and this will help with determining compression ratio.

Looks good.

Best of luck with the build.

I believe Duster Doug is correct about the pistons being so far down in the hole. The reason for this is Mopar was forced to drop the compression on all motors pretty severely beginning in '72, the same year they introduced the 400. A couple of reasons caused this, increasing emissions standards, decreasing octane ratings produced by oil companies lead to lowering of compression ratios. The simplest way to drop the compression was to simply install a shorter piston. Dishing the piston, or changing the compression chamber would be more difficult/expensive.

One reason early smog motors were such dogs is that not only did they lower the compression ratios they ruined any quench for the piston. Flame travel was severely compromised in these motors. This poor combustion chamber design also lead to motors that were more prone to detonation. Compression ratios were dropped in many cases to 8:1, yet would still detonate under some circumstances. Modern engines with aluminium heads, with well designed combustion chambers, and ports that provide well atomized fuel distribution frequently boast 10.5:1 compression while running on 87 or 91 octane fuel.

thanks for the info everyone, yesterday I cleaned out a shop to use, the guy said I can use it as long as I need it, I looked at another 400 again same thing its stock plus I pulled the pan on this to check it out so now it's getting disassembled and heading for the machine shop. I'll put up some new pics tonight

hey artie that red rag you saw in the motor was in there when it was started up last lol the bearings where all new but put in dirty so there was some groves in a couple of them, the cam looks great also found some metal in the pan but can't find where it came from.

Hey Hooks;Impossible to give a quote on shipping crank. They are pretty heavy, but it doesnt seem to matter a lot. Packaging it well, but keeping the size small will help. Whomever ships it,they will need to add lots of cushioning around the crank, and even a doulbe layer of cardboard would be a great idea. Those shipping companies can be brutal, tossing packages around, kicking them etc. Make sure it's well protected, pay the insurance on it against loss and damages and hope for the best.

As for cost,up here in Canada I have found Greyhound and Canada post to be the cheapest, most reliable but Fedex deserves an honourable mention as well. Stay away, far far away from DHL,they are horrible.I have experienced many delays with them.I never chose DHL,but some of my purchases have arrived via DHL (NOT BY MY CHOICE) and because thier dispatcher is in the next town, they seem to think it's O.K to delay my shipment until there are others coming my way,no matter the inconvenience to myself. They did this to a shipment that was clearly labelled priority shipment as well.SOOOOO DHL SUCKS IMHO.

When shipping within the USA I have had very good luck with UPS,and the united states postal service. Just dont wrap the package up in duct tape for ANY shipper, use clear packing tape only.Wrap the box in plain brown butchers paper, print some excellent labels out on your puter so there is no mistaking the addy.

Now I know that many here will not like me mentioning UPS. It seems they can be UPS or down, lol when it comes to reliablility, but I insure everything I ship and never have an issue with UPS.

It's the same formulae for every shipment. Wrap the box in brown paper, use packing tape, print clear labels and always insure. I havent had an issue yet,and have shipped stuff plenty of times across the border, within Canada, from a point within the USA etc.

I'll hazard a guess and say at least $60 to ship that heavy, big crank.

thats kinda what I was thinking 60 to 80 bucks, famousbob is sending me the steel crank he packing it up with Styrofoam, bubble wrap and plastic bag inside a cardboard box so I got my toes crossed it makes a safe trip

GREAT!! Make sure you store it on it's end,not laying down. This helps prevent it from warping.

like I said hooks I didn't know any thing about it other than It ran.and sounded good.as far as the pan that was lying on the floor and was just put on to set it on the floor.hell its hard to tell what was in there.I knew it would be tore down and cleaned and checked before I run it.I'm so glad you did...this motor belonged to a so called friend? .....

hey just want to give everyone a heads up, I haven't stopped working on the duster but I have slowed down a bunch cause of death in my family and now my mom is fighting cancer and its getting ready to take her also.
I do have some new pic's of the dusters work I just need to resize them first. hope everyone is having a great day
Chuck

Well, crap. I'm sorry to here this Hooks. Never seems like things are worse than when there is a death, and another coming to boot. I am truly sorry.

I'm back
I started on the ol duster again today its been a while since my moms passing so time to get on the ball again:blob:

Welcome back Hooks. Sorry to hear about about you mom. Did you resize the pics you were gonna post?
no I sure didn't I never even took them off the camera, not even sure if there still on it but I can get lots this week.

My condolences Chuck. No more cancer fof her though! I'm sure she is much happier! CAnt wait to see the duster

Hooks,
Glad to see you are back and keeping a good attitude. I to had to take time off with my wife and cancer. Cancer sucks. You are an inspiration to me to get off my lazy *** and get my head back in the game. Let us all know what you need. We may be miles away but this family is all about helping others. Post what you need, you never know when one of us has something laying around that we don't mind parting with. I am very sorry to hear about your mom. :angel9:
