I'm looking for a 1971 slant 6 225 engine and matching auto transmission (on the column), if anyone has one they'd like to sell. It can be in crappy condition but must run (or ran when it was pulled years ago). And hopefully it would be in the northeast U.S. so I can drive and pick it up. I'm not looking for anything high performance or recently rebuilt. Thanks.

Just curious why does it have to be a 1971 engine? They made them the same for eons, as was when I got it, you'd have been hard pressed to tell my 1974 version from a 71. Now though it has a later 70s peanut plug head and super 6 intake on it which weren't around yet in 71. And if it's ever been milled the numbers that prove "it's a 71" will have been wiped away anyway.
Anything 68-74 would be identical.
Older and you have the small pilot crank, newer ones have the peanut plug head, newer yet have the cast crank.
The only thing limiting yourself to "71 only" does is make it harder to find.
And on the trans.... It don't care whether it was column or console shifted.

I think I have a 71 904. It seems that's what one of them was when I ran the numbers......but I am a long way off in Georgia.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I was looking for a '71 with auto on the column because I'm putting the car back to being as correct as possible for '71, and it had a 225 with auto on the column originally.

As far as column vs console shift, a 904 is a 904.
A trans that came from a column shift car can be used in a console shift and vise versa
And a slant 6 demon doesn't have the pedigree of let's say a hemi cuda or even that of an original 340 dart. If it has a /6 in it and it runs and drives well it isn't as important that it has the original one except for sentimental reason.

Depending on the month the car was made, it could have a 1970 engine and transmission. My 2 cents.

Well that clouds the already-cloudy waters. I'm just looking for one that's correct for 1971 (air cleaner, paint colors, components, etc.). It didn't have the original engine/trans when I bought the car.

Why? They're all the same from 68 to 76 when they went to the cast crank and even then, other than that, they were very similar. Although I would try to stay with the forged crank engine, simply because the block, crank and rods are all different on the cast crank engines. You're just making things difficult on yourself which makes ZERO sense since the car no longer has the original engine. So even finding a 71 engine and transmission is a moot point since it won't be the original.

Ya, I just want it to be correct for 1971. There were several changes in them from 68-76.

thought Id said that above.

not any changes in the engine itself that meant much of anything, most changes were add on/ bolt on in those years. If you put a 68 engine in there or you put a 74 engine in there nobody at the local drive in would know the difference....as long as you painted it the right color for your year.... and there were no compression differences etc those years. if it were me Id be shaving the head and possibly changing the cam, no matter what year engine I found at the very least... things that cant be "seen".
