Looking for easier access to the oil filter

on the 318 in my '71 Dart GT as my old a$$ can't contort like I used to under the car (pinched nerve (C7), bursitis in both shoulders, etc...).

The car has the 90* adaptor on it with dual exhaust using the factory exhaust manifolds. Is there more, top side (over the fender), accessibility without the adaptor? Would running without the adaptor require a shorter filter (brand/mfr part number)? Would a remote oil filter be a better option (brand/mfr preference)?

Thoughts/ideas/suggestions?
 
I have both set ups. I don’t think there’s much accessibility difference between the two. Without the adapter I use a shorter filter.
 
It could be worse. I have to remove the torsion bar on the passenger side to get the filter off my swinger. I can get it off, just cant get it past the exhaust.
Summit sells a filter relocation kit. I used one back in the 90's and it worked great.

Really? My 70 318 car is no picnic but not impossible. What's your combo?

340/727 with HP manifolds. The issue is my fuel filter is mounted in that corner and the heater control valve, AC lines, etc. Bunch of stuff in the way in that corner. I will install a remote filter one of these days.

I use a strap wrench from the top and lift the filter out from above. I slip a thin plastic shopping bag over it first.

Maybe a wix 51348 will help with getting it out. I put one on my 360 in the 51 Fargo.its real tight to get the bigger filter out.

Headers advise using the shorter Wix filter
I will find out if that works when I Install the headers on my 70 Dart in a few weeks.
 
I am going to have to take off the 90 degree adapter on my 340/727 in a duster. I have Hooker super comp headers, there's just to many things trying to share the space, trans dipstick, oil filter . I guess the hot set up is the Canton racing oil filter plate, its like $70.00, you can get a factory oil filter plate from Mancini for about $17.00, or maybe find something in a salvage yard? I know its near impossible where I am, I think it was mentioned on here that you can use the plate off a Magnum engine.

I see. Yes, you have a lot more going on. I have air but it's dealer installed and a bit different. The HP manifolds probably don't help the issue.

I know with the starter, getting it out you need to swing the steering out of the way, maybe the same with this.

I run the Wix 51516 that is for a 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Turbo.
Have been for years.Everything from Slant 6 to my 472 Hemi.
Small size,tho larger than my 6LTR motorhome's oil filter. We (most) all change oil often sooner then most everyday drivers.

This plus an oil filter plate to connect the adapter, I relocated my oil filter to the firewall. If you are limited on space, you can see about fitting it in the wheel well. I cant remember if I did a series of photos on my install back in 2016 or so. Look in this thread;

Have you tried turning the steering wheel both ways? When you do that it moves the suspension allowing more space to drop the filter from the bottom.
 
My problem is not the steering, its the torsion bar and exhaust. I could remove the head pipe but honestly its easier to just remove the torsion bar. It only takes about 20 minutes so not a huge deal.
Yes, I tried the shorter filter and no dice. Its not the length but the diameter that causes issues.
If it werent for the aftermarket AC lines I would be able to pull it out from the top. On my bone stock 340 dart sport its tight but it will come out up top.

To the original poster, you should be able to get your filter out through the top fairly easy with that set up. If your running stock 318 manifolds I dont see why you would need the 90° adapter. The shorter filter (PH43 fram, 51068 I think is the wix number) would help but you should still be ok with the longer one(PH8A fram 51516 wix). I posted the fram number for ref only. I typically run wix on everything.
 
Yea. I understand the torsion bar comes out quick.
But how are the fine threads on your adjusting cam? I'd be hesitant to ratchet my adjuster in and out, unless I had to.
How about the height adjustment?
I wouldn't think that the torsion bar set up would fair well after being subject to the R&R every 3000 miles or so.

Ditto this same setup on my 72 Demon 408/727 Hooker Super Comps/90 deg adapter. Took me 3 hours to remove the filter the first time I did it. Neighbor gave me 3 diff filter wrenches to try alongside my 2. Finally found one that I could get about 2-3 deg rotation with each "grip" and finally got it to come off and out. Whew!!
 
relocate it it to your fender top. The plate you install on the motor should have 2 NPT fittings that you can crank Earls 90's on and clock so the fittings face up or down or back and then run the 2 hoses to the top of the fender. Use a filter that has a anti drain-back valve (Purolater). Easiest set up to do and not expensive. Like this sold unit. just add oil rated hoses.
