Love Winter ?

For those that don't like the cold months, how warm do you keep your home. What do you set your thermostat at?

i have some 3rd person experience with this stuff. The intent of free injection is harm reduction. It may save lives and can work for some. I also know some who have recovered. They deserve a lot of respect and praise!
I do think it also depends on the city where it's available.

Only had wood stoves growing up. First “heated” place I lived in was a Navy barracks. Nowdays, the heater is 62-68F, if it is on, during winter. I feed the fireplace on freezing days (if we are home all day) and nights (till we go to sleep).

AC ON 72-76 in summer, if on at all.

...similar to us. We used to heat with wood (by choice) but now only light the stove at the end of the day and enjoy it during the evening when we're not active.Let it go out over night so it's cool for sleeping.I'll run it all day when we have a really cold snap but by and large our winters are mild now.

Yup everything used to freeze solid until I got to about 25 30 years now just dress decent and go do whatever needs doing think it was a blood pressure thing. At 18 my doc took blood pressure 3 times shook his head told me to come back next week took it 3 more times shook his head an said well I guess it’s ok. 62 now smoker drinker love bacon fat blood pressure normal.
How is your cholesterol Ahoey?
I'm 72 in a week and a half, never smoked, never was a big drinker and same as you I love bacon but have it maybe once a month. Everything in moderation. Blood pressure is excellent, my cholesterol is a little bit high ever since I retired 8 yrs ago. At your age you have to be proactive with your health. You have to spoil yourself once in a while lol

The Wife and I do the multiple "heats" of firewood !

Done that 6.5 cords in 8 ft lengths delivered to my yard for 28 years. Cut it to Stove length, split it, piled it in wood shed, hauled it in to house, hauled ashes out, cleaned chimney. No more. Heat with electricity smart thermostat and pay hydro. With the cost of wood the time and effort the insurance and equipment cost.
probably costing pretty close to the same money

I have no shortage of Red Oak and Maple.. costs me about a gallon of gas per bush cord and some chain oil! Wife works for free... and about the only thing on the property that the sleezy insurance company didn't care about is the airtight fireplaces. I did have to hide gramma's parlor stove in the shop when the appraiser was here, but no longer use it anyhow.

Haven't been up to that area in quite a while. By the looks of it you have a lot of peace and quiet. Beautiful spot.

Cool I mean warm. Still burn wood in detached shop but it’s mostly electric also. Just don’t need to work that hard anymore.

We have a gas fireplace downstairs and an electric one in the living room. No muss no fuss just the way I like it.

we got an electric one in the hot tub room, and 2 gas fire places...one in the living room, the other outside on the deck
the one in the living room, i run on a thermostat, if the room drops below 78 the fire place comes on
pretty cool...but the real nice thing is, i can turn it on manually, even when the power is out

I can do that with the gas one downstairs as well. It's also on a thermostat.

Built this house no basement!! Grade beam with slab on grade. The only hole in the ground I will ever occupy will be the very small one room apartment. Being in residential construction figured out that you can build way cheaper on top of ground than you can below grade. The other thing is when you dig a hole in the ground it will fill up with water no matter what you do. And that’s not an if that’s a when. I know a basement isn’t included in square footage for taxes but it still adds value although I don’t know why. My opinion

even with the pond out back, i still have 2 sump pumps to keep the basement from turning into a kiddy pool

My father in law has same problem. Has two pumps one runs basically non stop slows down a bit Jan. Feb. the other is a new one if the main one pukes and two 12 volt bilge pumps for back up if power goes out. No thanks don’t need that headache.

you wanna talk headache?

i got this pipe coming into the garage where the duster sits

never gave it much thought, other than that it was weird, but oh well

until one fall, we musta had a little higher ground water level then usual, and i noticed that when the sump pump kicked in, water started coming into the house through that pipe

had me stumped for a while, untill i noticed there was a little wood panel under that bucket

and of course, a second sump pit under there

im guessing the pump that belongs in there crapped out and rather then fixing it, the previous owner just covered it up

and off course, i got to have a generator for when the power goes out

My sister came up from Alabama for the holidays.
One day she was in this huge thick heavy parka, said she was freezing, it was nice out in the low 50's.
I was wearing a light sweatshirt.
WV winters the last few years have been very mild.

Doc checked it didn’t say anything concerning it so I assume. Being a bricklayer and an outdoors person every day is a day at the gym. Cut down lots on smoking 3/4 less than what it was. Still fry my eggs in bacon fat and like to have a few wobbly pops on weekends. Don’t pound 250 300 8’” concrete blocks in wall much anymore but still very active with the residential work. Hopefully I’ll slow down gradually and get paid for what I know not what I do

Yup you’re backing up my decision for no basement thanks. Sorry your having to deal with all that crap. Good equipment and backups will ease the headache good luck.
