Making a Slant 6 look, and sound cool

-
This is very true. Are you dead set on having a v8 though. Hot slants are rare and to me that makes them cool. I went down the same path as you and had a v8 in the car by the time I was 18. There are days now though that I miss the slant and the mentality I had with it. My friends and I would take the car anywhere without even thinking. Now that I am older and my car is less practicle it just doesn't happen.

DONT BE IN A HURRY TO GO FAST. Enjoy your time with the slant!

I may just save up and get another Mopar instead of swapping engines and everything. That way I have twice the fun. I really love the way Dusters and Demons look, probably my favorite A-body.

I'll probably drop a few dollars into my Slant 6, but I definitely won't go overboard.

What is with the solex carbs ?

I can visualize your fuel gauge as it plummets when you put your foot on the gas.. do you see 6 mpg ?

Not Solex carbs but HIF6 SUs. I don't expect great mileage with all three carbs sucking gas all the time lol

Sorry, brain fart..tat is what I meant..I played with them for 25* years..took them off a rover v8 ?

I have got to see what that looks like when you have it on the block and ready for going in the engine compartment! That intake and valve cover look AWESOME together!

The motor (a 65 slant) is in the process of going together now. There will definitely be pics after it's assembled.

Leanna does some bitchin work yeah! WOW!
She do the valve cover I know, but did she also do the intake with the "Offy" colored in?

Yes, she did both for me. Cosmetically, the intake wasn't looking too good when she received it. It is an Aussie Lynx triple SU that has the red surrounding the raised letters "LYNX" and "VALIANT". The carbs are HIF6s that have been totally rebuilt and matched internally and set up for a big six by a SU guru up in Canada.

Everyone's definition of "cool" is different. Here is my slant with stock cam with 2.25 exhaust and a glasspack.

I used Eastwood 2-part engine paint in the original '72 colors. But they have lots of colors if you want something custom. The paint lays down nice - I brush painted everything without removing the engine from the car.

Maybe add a cool decal

I like this idea. Nice and simple. I bought a chrome valve cover, so it'll be a little flashy, but I think I'm gonna keep it simple like this.

Bill ,, Summer is here. Waiting to here and see what that thing is gonna do.. Soon ?

Photo for FlyingFalcon....... Maybe I can do a sound bite for you in the next few days.

I've got a mild cam in my '72 Duster which lopes pretty nice at about 700 RPM, and a Thrush welded muffler. Their essentially the same thing as a Flowmaster, but cost quite a bit less. I've had plenty of people ask me if I had a V8 under the hood.

Thanks! That's similar to what I have in mind. Bought a chrome valve cover and some other stuff. I've been spraying a few things with some black primer, air cleaner, some metal support pieces, just stuff like that. Really cleaned it up and made it look nicer.

Try an offenhouser intake with 500cfm edelbrock, the dutra duals exhaust and follow up with spin tech mufflers and a cam for lopey sound. It will have power and the sound your looking for. Deep and raspy. Glass packs to me sound funny

Im close to firing this one up. should sound different than anything else I have.

split header and glasspacks..I have that on mine..love the sound...and throw some flamethrowers on it

My current daily driver is a 64 Dart with a stock 170. Exhaust is original with the exception of a 2.5 inch Flowmaster and simple downturn just ahead of the axle. Sounds AWESOME. Nice low rumble at idle, and you get that classic inline 6 wail at highway speeds. I'm not crazy about the way Flowmasters sound on V8's, but it's the best sounding muffler I've ever heard on a 6.

I cleaned and painted my motor, put on a chrome valve cover and a healthy carb and clifford headers. It was my first car and still my most reliable. I love it more than my '14 Dart Rallye. Oh and for s's and g's i threw a pic of me in High School. haha

Just my personal opinion (your opinion is just as valid), it's a 6 banger. It's never going to sound really mean without spending a lot of money, and then it'll be false advertising :)

Also I'd say that a 70 Dart isn't a muscle car.

A car of that vintage is so old, that if you want to get girls to dig it all you have to do is make the car back into what it originally was... just make it a nice, clean 1970 Dart and it'll be the coolest car in your school. Detail the engine bay and the Slant Six will look better than any modern engine.

So I'm just saying, instead of trying to make it like what everybody identifies as cool (big mean fast strong loud 8 cylinder), realize that what makes the car so cool is that it's still around 45 years after it was built. Make it as much like it was in 1970 and it'll get more and more cool the older it gets. You can always do little customizations too like small decals, or tint if you keep it respectable, or a nice set of rims (the right size for the car!)... or dual exhaust, or whatever but keep it clean and simple.

Just my .02!

What are some parts that I could paint an detail? I'm already planning to paint the air cleaner (A mix of black and the body color I'm going with), and/or maybe put a Super Six decal on it.

Thanks!

You can paint almost the whole thing, literally everything except for the exhaust manifold. I actually tried to do the exhaust manifold with some high temp manifold paint and baked it and everything and it still peeled off. Either way, thanks Abodybomber for the mention. I don't like to leave my slant alone.

I just did these accel wires too as a nice little touch once wire 5 seperated, and I figured I might as well build my own since I'd never done it before. It was kind of fun, and I think the longer runs lets it look better than the stock rat nest.

I made an aluminum plate to use for the spring return since I run a Weber 38/38 and it helps cast a shadow on the rusty looking exhaust manifold. http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/serj22/IMG_20140509_144951_zpsbb2fafd8.jpg

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/serj22/IMG_20140417_175139_zpsc159563e.jpg

IT was all done with 1shot, some heavy duty purple power degreaser and a steam cleaner, a steady hand, and several 1" brushes. It has all lasted longer than a year without fading, deteriorating, or coming off.

Now your issue with sounding cool - I bought a glasspack, and coupled with the stock exhaust it was still quiet - like too quiet, so for a total of $109 on ebay, I bought this:

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/serj22/IMG_20140514_162850_zpsd13b7f54.jpg

It's 2" and couples well with the stock exhaust. I had it welded in for $80 and they even added a curve to the end of it till I want to go back and pipe it out to the side of the car.

http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/serj22/IMG_20140516_102446_zps657ce7ae.jpg

It's wired up into a hole I drilled under the door sill plate, and up to the dash with a 3 pole switch, open - closed - off. When it's closed it sounds normal, and then when open it sounds like an angry demon wasp from hell. It definitly does not sound like a v-8, but the heads will turn, and you will have to turn up the radio to hear your music. IT also doubles a horn because people WILL MOVE when you have it open. So you can cruise on the freeway without droning yourself to death too.
and of course here's a video:

Heres how mine sounds...Granted this is the first pass ever on this engine, and I took it easy.Shifted it at 4000 RPM, and let off way early.
