Has anyone devised a way to keep from boogering up painted/refinished fasteners? As soon as I put a socket or wrench on them to torque it, it gets marred. I've tried to use tape but that doesn't seem to work.

There used to be plastic liners that would fit in the next size larger socket for that purpose but I’ve never used them so can’t say how effective they are

Are you using six point sockets and wrenches when tightening? Painters tape applied around the head and six point tools will leave little too no marks on fasteners when tightening.

I don't recall which point socket I used, but I will try this. I did use tape but that didn't help. I must have used 12 point, then. Thanks in advance!

Back when I worried about such stuff I wouldn't paint hardware that needed to be removed/installed... I would wait till it was finally installed then paint it with my air brush...

If you have to spray paint nuts and bolt heads use only a bare minimal of primer and paint, its very easy to over spray and create a shell.

A six-point metric size socket/wrench equivalent of your SAE fastener size might be a tighter fit as well.

always hated that too
what i would do is make a little cone out of light cardboard that way can spray around the bolt without over spray
