i need help .I recently got a318 out of a 68 charger for my 72 dart /6 to 8 conversion.I want to increase horses and performance.my question is do i go with a performer or mopar intake and why.which is better?i m also thinking of changing the cam and am courious about the purple .which onedo i get? whats the difference. any help would be appreciated

mostly more horse than stock.im not racing, except maybe at a light.i really dont know.im new to this whole thing.

what i want is to get as much horse power out of this engine without boring it and things like that.I figured i would change the cam ,intake, carb ,and headers.but being new to all this ,i would like to knoww what setup would give me this.(i hear its best to match these things).I dont know what cam,or even the difference the lifts do.just a good healthy motor. maybe around 300 hp?

Basicly, you want to use the engine as is, and bolt on parts to get you around 300 HP? Right?
Open air cleaner, 600 - 650 cfm carb
Performer
Crane 272/284 cam
Not porting stock heads? (Mistake) Then use small valve 360 heads.
1-5/8 headers into a "X" pipe and great flowing mufflers. 2-1/2 pipe.
The comp. ratio should be 9.0-1, mill heads to achieve.

hey rumble.if i was to port the heads..what do i have them ported to.and why would it be a mistake not to port them.

Velocity. The bigger port 360 head doesn't have it on the smaller displacing 318.
If you speak with BJR racing, he could really help with the in's & out's with the head best.
For a comparo dyno tested by a been there done that fella, click this and scroll to the bottom right. The last 2 parragraphs have what your looking for.

So how does 40 HP sound by the right parts choice?

i'd put a higher stall speed convertor in while its out
of the car. 2100 to 2600 it really wakes a street car up.
put a shift kit in if you can.
all the other changes can be made with the engine in
as money premits.

if you want a good running car that can be driven daily
with little maintenance.
600 cfm carb
dual plane intake
RV cam and springs
2 1/4 dual exhaust
recurved distributor
2200 stall speed
904 trans
shift kit
8 1/4 posi 342 gears
pinion snubber
port match intake & heads
headers if you must { they can be a major pain }
go to tech. forums and read about each part i've listed
don't worry about who's part is best
lastly read about heads biggers not always better
i know this sounded vague,by the time you finish reading the forums
you'll know what and who's parts you need.
my suggestions are just to get you reading and very conservative.
good luck

Sublime in my humble opinion you have to make sure your parts match. Theres alot of guys here who can tell you what parts work good together and what don't. I actually have a performor intake and 600 cfm eddy carb I just took out out of my car. I also have a slightly higher stall for a 904. This is a nice combo. It's better then factory. It should may get you around the 300 hp your looking for. As for the heads I remember reading somewhere that that the later 318 heads, but prior to the magnum, flowed better. Don't worry if I'm wrong someone here will quickly correct me. I personally would also make sure you have good compression befor you put ANY money into your motor.

By the way Longarm is completely right. The more you read and talk to people who know the more you'll know what you want.
