Motor won't fire now...advice needed.

OK, I had the motor starting and running several times. I adjusted the lifters to lessen the noise, it helped and I turned off the engine. 10 min. later I went to start it and did nothing but crank. I pulled a plug and it has spark. It is getting fuel, maybe too much, the carb. needs a kit. Would this have an effect? Any recommendations welcome. obtw it's a 273 2v.
 
my thought would be mabye you adjusted them too much and now the valves are staying open a bit not allowing good compression. I would try a compreesion check. My theory is you need 3 things for an engine to run-fuel compression and spark, so if you are getting fuel and spark try the compression. Hope this helps!!
 
That thought came to me last night. First time I've adjusted valves, wingin' it.
 
Check the simple stuff, like the ballast resistor, coil...
 
Been there done that on my 273. I set my rockers at 1\2 turn past zero lash and it fired right up. Good luck!
 
Well she's running again but the heads are coming off. #8 intake valve is stuck open and she won't f*ing move. I've a friend who owns a machine shop who does heads and has several pairs of 318s on the shelf. Would these be a viable swap or should I just have these redone and ported?
 
If your motor is originally a 66 model 273 they have closed chambers, the 318 heads unless the 302 casting are open combustion chambers. You'll likely loose compression using the 318 heads - my guess, but you gotta pull em anyway, just compare the 318 and 273 heads then decide.
 
Weeeell I'm back, work has kept me busy. I pulled the RH head and exhaust. #8 intake valve was stuck open and bumped by the piston. Tim, my friend with the shop, was able to knock out the valve, clean out the guide, put in a new valve, and check compression. The head checked out OK. I found the heat riser valve(?) in the exhaust rusted shut and the cross overs plugged with carbon. I cut out the valve, cleaned out the carbon and did a re-assembly Friday night. At 12:10 a.m. Sat. morning I fired the motor.

Now a timing issue. I set it to factory specs last night and it was running smooth until i hooked the vacuum advance back-up. It gave the motor a 'lope' when idling. What gives? :scratch:
 
Your vacuum advance is hooked up to a manifold vacuum source - probably needs to go on a ported vacuum source instead. What carb are you running ?
 
I would pull the dist cap and check the advance in the distributor-make sure it is not worn/loose and also if it is a points dist put new points in it. If you haven't adjusted the idle mixture on the carb do that also.
 
Thanks for the tips. I'm running a stock 2v carb, re-man., and I've already changed the points. I'll check the vacuum advance to see if something wrong there. The car did set for 15+ years.

I'll have someone check the points and make sure I set them right. If it is the advance, how do I get into the dist. and check it? thanks.
