My Duster Adventures

-
I’ll have to put em in as-is and see if it all bolts up good, then if all looks good, I’ll pull em and paint em. Still need to pull my transmission mount back out and have it blasted and paint that too. Goal is just to get it running/driving for MoParty in September.

I'm going up to Moparty and participating in the Grand Master Challenge. Should be fun!

I’ll definitely come say hi! I’m planning on running my Duster in the autox again this year. I was pretty stoked when a picture of my car made it into a Hotrod article last year!

That’s awesome! I’ve never been on an auto cross in my life. I’m jumping in head first. I’ll be the dude in the black duster knocking cones over…lol

Lol it’s loads of fun! Last year was the first time I’d run an autox and surprisingly I didn’t take out too many cones, and that was with stock manual steering. This year should be a lot easier with the power rack on the HDK.

Sign up for the grand master challenge. You'll get to do the the SSS challenge and a drag race. Although, I think we only get an hour on the drag strip, so probably only enough time to make a couple hot laps.

It would be fun to run it on the strip just for gits n shiggles to see what it does. Only $25 more… hmm…

Do it! And then you both need to post a shared thread with a whole bunch of pictures and talk about how you dominated the whole thing!

Even if by "dominate" you mean "not a cone was left standing".

I have always wanted to try an autocross, but so far nothing local. Pretty sure I would get lost like Finnegan seems to do every time, but I'd like to try.

I'd love to try autocross some day too! I'll have to swap out my skinny wide tire setup though. Someday!

When in doubt, do like Dulcich, make your own course!!

Hangers and hardware came in from Mancini today! So when I goy home from work, I jacked up the rearend and started working on swapping them out! I ALMOST had the drivers side swapped when it started dumping rain in sideways! Boo! So now I sit on the couch, watching supernatural and waiting out the rain.

Its the same every where on the east coast.

Rain slowed to a dry drizzle long enough for me to get the leafs installed. I sure hope the settle because currently the back ends higher than it was! Lol

Well, I came across this post this morning in a thread titled “What’s your plans or goals for 2020 with your ride” and it made me kinda sad… I didn’t achieve a single one of those goals last year. But dammit, I’ll get most of them done this year!!

EDIT: I guess I did get the new mufflers installed last year, so there’s that. Lol

At least you have a plan, mine is still sitting in a storage building for the last two years, I will drive it this year, there is a car show at work on the 10th so I am going to get mine out and put some miles on it.
Sad thing is all I have to do to it is turn the key and go, its ready, just waiting on me.

I’ll give you a 3 step plan for yours. 1. Go to storage unit. 2. Start car. 3. Drive that thang!

Sometimes it bees like that. Do like I do. Don't set goals. That way when you get anything done, it feels good.

Tonight, just so I’d get a little something done, I decided to clean up the drivers seat. Once it was all clean, I flipped it over to see what all I was lacking as far as having the modified tracks/mounts finished. Found two spots that I wanted to add gussets, so I cut those out with a death wheel, (told my wife I’d like a plasma cutter for Christmas and doggone-it if she didn’t tell me she needs to know exactly which one! Fingers crossed! Lol) welded the gussets in, cleaned up the tracks and hit em with some black epoxy appliance paint. Drivers seat is ready for install!

Well, I see all the posts after August 27th still aren’t back, which sucks but it is what it is I guess…. Only thing that I can think of that I had posted in that time was about the coolant overflow bottle bracket, so I’ll throw those pictures back up.

Basically, the oem Hyundai bracket design caused the bottle to sit 3/4” away from the inner fender which caused interference with the radiator. So I fabbed up a new bracket that allowed the bottle to sit against the inner fender, giving me just enough room to get the radiator in.

I’ve been working on the car the past several evenings and worked on it all day today. Here’s some of the progress in pictures.

Got a couple “stubs” welded onto the subframe connectors to catch the rear outer seat bolt. Since the seat belts are built into these seats, I’m taking extra precautions to insure these seats aren’t coming loose in an accident!

I also got the console brackets fabbed up and welded in.

While positioning the console, I made sure I had just a smidge of room between the top of the console and the ashtray when it’s open.

The current location of the shifter is going to be an issue, I can’t install the console trim bezel due to where the shifter comes up through. I have a plan to remedy this, I’m just not going to have time to get it done before MoParty next weekend. So for now, I’ll just run the console without the trim.

Here you can really see how the shifter is an issue…. The shifter comes right through where I intend on putting my AFR gauge.

Today, I got 2” drop blocks installed and while it looks MUCH better, my pinion angle is still off by 2* do I ordered me a set of 1” blocks that have a 2* taper built into them. Those come in tomorrow so I’ll get those installed and then the ride height should be pretty freaking great!
990D03BA-BF2B-4E9C-9B90-AFC01565ACD7.jpeg

I got all the power steering lines run, minus two hose clamps, so tomorrow I’ll get those in and fill the system with fluid and check for leaks. I got my brakes bled over the past couple days as well. No pics of all that.

I also bought a rust free rear passenger floor pan from a guy on fb. It came in the mail today so I unpacked it, then looked at how much I was going to have to hack it up in order to work around the subframe connector and the seat mount “stub”, so I decided that first I’d try my hand at making my own pan pieces and maybe just sell the rust free pan to someone who can use the whole thing. I did get the biggest section welded in successfully but didn’t get any pictures of it. Tomorrow, I intend on spending most of the day working on the car again. Hoping to get all the welding on the floors done, paint the floors and get the seats and console bolted in, along with getting some other stuff done.
Bigger visual update tomorrow night hopefully!

Got more done on the Duster today. The 1” blocks came in today, installed those and the ride height looks almost perfect! But like an idiot, I forgot to take a picture of the car. There will be plenty of pictures taken of the car in the next couple weeks though.
I also got the rear passenger floor finished up! For the first time since I own the car, it has 100% solid floors! It’s not perfect but dadgummit, I think they turned out alright! I finally figured out the method of closing in gaps with weld. That save my butt because I cut two of the panels a little small.
So here’s the panels all welded in.

Here’s after I seam sealed it. Almost forgot to take a picture before I had it all painted.

And finally, the floors are painted!

Then I started working on getting the heater box reinstalled. I put butyl sound deadener on the firewall, then took the falling apart insulation board and traced it out on a piece of fiber board and cut that out.
922E3EE6-95A5-4440-A18A-CFACDA419763.jpeg
I also traced it out on a piece of the foil backed insulation that I’ll be using in the car and used adhesive to fasten the insulation to the board. In typical fashion, I forgot to get pics of that as well. :BangHead:
My intention of installing the heater box was thwarted by my lack of organization. I have no idea what I did with the two nuts that hold the heater controls in place and I’m missing two screws that hold the cables to the heater box. I’ll steal that stuff off my parts car and hopefully get the box in tomorrow.

That's lookin really nice! When are you comin to work on mine? lol

Well, I just saw the other day where you said y’all are driving Vixen everywhere, so that means you’re ahead of me in your progress and from what I’ve seen, doing a great job as you go!
