My home inspection of Speedmaster heads

-
My speedmaster springs have lost about 600 rpm before float. But I have a solid cam and shift at about 7000 rpm. That's about where they float now. Not saying springs are bad, just not for my combo.
Most lose 9-14 lbs after heat cycling in a running engine turning upwards of 65-7000rpm.
Better the manufacturing..the less they lose. But most major brands 'Well known' and widely used stuff are light after 1000-1500 miles. Again why you spend the extra or CHECK and shim. . . Be it racing on a dollar or a dime...be smart.

Well I figured I would add a little more information to this thread as there are so many. I just got a call back from the machine shop and I had them there one week to the day put in one whole hour on them and is charging me $95. The results were damn good but I'll have more on it after work tonight..

Okay I had them checked out. And they checked out LOL.. he pressure tested them and they were perfect. He looked at the valve job and didn't have a problem with it.. they were at 135 to 145 closed and 320 at my Max lift.. he said they had much more than I will ever go more room for lift.. he said he liked the retainers and the hardend shims... He said he had to clean them up as the lubricant had dried up.. nothing stock of course just the signs of sitting on the shelf for 5 years... he said the valve guides were well within tolerance and the seals again work right. Lubricated everything I put them back together.. $95...
And also compare the Edelbrock gaskets to the cometic and they were identical...

So you're running them OTB without any port cleanup for now.

Probably not "for now", forever lol..
I know I'm not going to do any porting myself or cleaning up... And I know I'm not going to pay to have it done.. the car with its current heads has more than enough horsepower for the things that I want to do with it... At this point everything is just Overkill...
I have a reputation for the slowest stroker on the internet and I would like to keep it that way...

I have been real busy, and worn out, but man it makes me laugh every time you say that...
well it's true! Every single one of these internet heroes has a faster car than mine... Yet every time I get in it it damn near scared the living crap out of me it's so damn fast.. more than that all the torque! now I'm fixing to dump the radiator and take the motor and transmission out and pop these heads on. That and my new fancy schmancy Chrome headers... maybe even a new clutch who knows I can inspect that while it's out..
In the meantime the 68-69 roadrunner satellite belvedere search continues..
Just hit a guy in the knees with the offer for a 69 satellite with no title...

Your's may not be the slowest for long, I plan on having mine together this summer. Because of my budget it will be a totally WRONG combination. But I will drive it anyway.

Are you looking for a RR for yourself?

Yes I'm beginning the search.likely something that will come home on a trailer, something that will make people wonder what I was thinking what are smart? Like something I can afford...

Well it's been 6 months since Black Friday it looks like I'll have to take matters into my own hands...

*Update*
SM heads installed and runs great. Easier to turn the manual steering with the 52 lbs loss, ran the same around town, definitely faster out of town. No other changes to the car besides the heads. Car still has 2.94 gears, stock converter, and a small cam (.427 lift/ 204 @ 050 on intake side). Used factory stock rockers/pushrods. :)

Ok thanks. They seem to be too much to the inside like mine. I do realize that the rocker sweeps across the stem from inside to out. I’ll be putting the heads on next week. Good luck, I hope the stock stuff works good as that is what my buddy wants me to use on his. I really like ur vids. Kim

Nice thread. Long read. LOL

I just did a home inspection on my heads. Seemed to be fine, ports didn’t leak. There is one valve tip higher than the rest, same on the other head. At least that’s consistent. LOL
I’ll also be using the stock used rockers and pushrods. I don’t mind, maybe next year I’ll use 273 adjustable rockers, and switch to a MILD solid cam, as this is going in a 4x4 truck.

Did u check to see where the contact patch is? Do u have pics u can post? Thanks. Kim.
As far as pictures, this is all I can take. I didn’t check contact patch. Is there anything you can see by these pics as the rockers are bolted on?

With stock rockers i would be more worried about the thickness on the push rod side.
That's the only failure i have seen is when the ball gets to thin and the the push rod, pushes threw the rocker arm.
