My New Garage

Great to hear we all think alike on the windows. I wanted glass block up high to let light in and not fret about security. But since mine was built in the midst of Covid, the builder couldn't get any glass block (so he says!) so I have no windows. I'm looking at additional lighting for the interior but with the high ceilings, the 8 large LED fixtures so far shed quite a bit of light. Will likely get some of those LED lights on a stand to use under/around a car if/when I put in a hoist.
 
Hmmmm....

The 24 x 42 shed/shop in our new place (still unheated) has no windows, but the ridge is open about 6-8", and the vent is made of some clear material (plastic? fiberglass?), so it doesn't get completely dark in there when I shut the lights off. And I like that...

(Edit: You can see some light coming through the ridge in this picture taken from when we were moving in.)

I plan on insulating it next spring, and have been considering doing a "hot roof" with expanding foam, but that would negate the light now coming through the ridge vent.

I never thought of installing windows of some sort mounted up high...

For sure, the ceiling height is 132” and it’s a HD-9.

I’ve got the lift on the highest setting and there’s about 3” of air above the Scamp.

Find a nice Ramcharger and a wreched D3500 dulley and make a faux dulley Ramcharger using the rear fenders.

Modern LED strip lighting or 20-30 LED Can Lights placed strategically is so much better that old flicker Florescent tube. Cost up front is a bit high but will pay for themselves in a couple years. And multi control switches so you can zone light too.

Skylights or "SolarTube" work well and you can still put R60 insulation in the ceilings.

Yep, got rid of my tube lighting, well worth the cost and VERY easy to hang and wire together, I need to but four on a switch, and put the other 4 on a switch, my eyes don't do good in high lighting, need to keep a cap on all the time, 30x40 concrete almost glows, 12 ft off the floor.

Insulating the shed is not really about saving power. It is a creature comfort idea. Even without true AC, the slab floor will help keep the temps down if it does not heat soak.

When its 115F out and the shed is a chilly 90F it makes a huge difference.

Or like up here in the Seattle area, when its 40F and pouring rain, having a warm 60F shed without draughts is so nice.

My attached 3 hole garage is 725 sq/ft so not huge but I wish it was double sized.

Already had to put a new Transmission in but lots of small things , like fixing my fiberglass fender , small rot spot in my quarter , raising the front end , removign the factory console and hurst shifter , installing a Hurst super shifter 3. all small stuff , for now.

Thanks for your comments, I installed a lift that would work in your garage, it’s a backyard buddy high lift so I can place a truck underneath with they extended lift height. You say you have 15 feet ceilings so you’d have lots of clearance, mine are 14 foot

It's great to hear of people getting a garage like they always wanted and then USING it!! I'll bet it felt really good to accomplish that work in there. Congrats to you for that!

I hope to use mine soon. So far, still unpacking boxes and getting settled. Plenty of honey-do's on the house seem to keep me distracted!

Drew out a workable layout on a napkin while brainstorming with a friend. Then built a 1/4"= 1' scale cutaway model using Arckit components and test fit with 1/43 scale diecast cars. I wanted a large usable garage, but it couldn't be metal construction and the design had to meet HOA approval.

If I remember it was about 6500.00 and I had them send it to me in primer as I didn’t want their standard red /black. The hoist is powder coated Snakeskin Green (Viper Colour) but if you do get one and get it powder coated I’m sure they can match your sublime, I went for the 110 as I wired for 7 hoists. Garage is also wired for 220 for a compressor and welder. It may not look like I do anything in the garage but I have restored all my cars in the garage

Not sure how you keep it that clean. Looks great. Mine is always covered in grinding dust & overspray.

Awesome Shop!!!
I have one recommendation. If that heater you have mounted in the corner is vent less replace it ASAP with a vented unit heater or Rinnai vented wall heater. Those heaters are basically Humidifiers and will be introducing gallons of water to your tools and car on a daily basis. If its Electric disregard my post, except the part that your shop looks awesome!

Its going on year 3 and haven't seen any problems yet. I'll look into it though. Thank you.
