Not sure if I'm in the right forum for my question bu here goes.

I have a chance to buy a very nice low mileage (46k) 1966 Dodge Dart GT, 273 High Performance (solid lifter car), automatic, numbers matching, factory a/c, manual disc brakes, southern car.
Questions: 1- how rare is the 273 High Performance.
2- what is the HP as I am finding outputs of 230 hp and 275 hp on line. Not
clear as they refer to the D/Dart drag cars built that year (50 or so).
3- Any production numbers

Stick around, I'll get some numbers for you.

First of all, welcome to FABO. The Dart you're looking at sounds like a keeper especially with the low miles, AC, and disc brakes. The "Charger 273" is a great little engine rated at 235 horsepower. Back in 66 they didn't have vin's stamped on the blocks and transmissions. That wasn't started until about 1968 so there is no way you can have a "numbers matching" drive train but the car probably has the original drive train. Date code correct is as close as you can come.
Lets get into production numbers a bit. I'll make a chart to make it easier.
Total 1966 Dart GT production..........23,796
170 slant 6.........................................428
225 slant 6.....................................12,969
273 2 barrel.....................................7,543
273 4 barrel.....................................2,856
4 speed.....................................1,237
automatic..................................1,619
Unfortunately there is no further breakdown for these cars and all include hardtops and convertibles. Yes it is a rare car. One of only 1,619 with of that model with that engine/trans combination.
The D Dart drag cars were a very limited production model with just a handful left. @ddartdude is the expert on those.
When you get a chance we would love to see some photos and more about the car. toolmanmike

Mike, thanks for the info, much appreciated. I am in negotiations with the owner, a friend I have known for 45 years, he had the car for 20years. So this will make it easier. I was looking for a B5 blue 1969 swinger 340, done or project, like the one I had in 71-72. I am more familiar with that car and B-bodies from that era like my '68 GTX. Will post pics if the deal goes through. Again thanks for the info. Bob.

mike, I just got the vin on the '66 dart GT. LM23D62------ I know the D is for the engine, but the decoders I am using say 273-2bbl. Non of the decoders show a 273-4bbl. You seem to be knowledgable in this vehicle and any help is greatly appreciated. Bob.

The engine code is on the vin tag but the 4 barrel designation is on the fender tag under the capital letters "AB". The 2 barrel is #31 and the 4 barrel is #32. That info will also show up on the build sheet.

LM23D6 is:
L=Dart
M=Medium price range. (is it a 270 model hardtop? If it was a GT it would be a "P" which is "premium")
23=2 door hardtop
D=273
6=1966
?=assembly plant
xxxxxx=sequence number

If this car is in fact a 270 model with a HP273, I have some new production numbers you're going to like.

Just to show the differences between models with HP 273's:
LL (170 model) 109 4 speed 54 auto
LM(270 model) 215 4 speed 216 auto
LP(GT model) 1237 4 speed 1619 auto

Only 50 D/Darts were produced. All built the same.

My son just picked up a 66 Dart GT. His is a hipo 273, column shift automatic, power steering, power brakes, vinyl 1/2 top, and a 7 1/4" rear.

hope it is ok to ask, as this is not my post. toolmanmike, do you by chance have the production numbers for the 1965' Dart GT 273HP four speed cars? Thanks also for the 66' Info!
