ok. the 72 duster i am working on had points ignition. so i installed my msd box. but stupid me, when i hooked up my toggle switch under the dash, i put the wires on wrong. so i fired my msd.
now i have a old harness that is electronic ignition. but alot of ends are hacked off, so i want to use the section out of it to run electronic ign.

i have the harness, the ecu, volt reg.

i printed out a picture that a-bodyjoe had listed on here for another member, but it is for a hot rod.

does anyone have the conversion instructions that comes with the kit from m.p?

Do you have a 4 or 5 pin ECU? It shouldn't be that hard to ues Joe's picture to wire up the factory harness that you have.

i would have to go look for sure, but believe it is a 5 pin. it came out of a 73 duster

now what i do not understand, cause i have a ballast resister up un the firewall, near the master cylinder...................... points has one too?

i have the ecu plug-in, and i am wondering can i just tap into the stock harness? i have no clue how to read a electrical diagram

In the case of the "4 pin" ECU, the ballast is wired and does the same exact job as in a contact points system

In a "5 pin" (older) ECU, the twin ballast does the same job as above, and is simply TWO DIFFERENT resistors in the same mounting. The second half of the ballast --which is a different resistance-- supplies voltage to the "insides" of the ECU.

Chrysler modified the circuitry inside the ECU so that the second half of the resistor is not needed.

In other words, if you were to wire it up with the "twin" (4 wire) resistor, it would then work with EITHER Chrysler ECU

So:

Older "5 pin" ECU MUST have 4 pin "twin" ballast

Newer "4 pin" ECU CAN use either 2 or 4 pin ballast

If you are using an msd box and the electronic conversion for a 70's or newer system, I believe you don't need the ballast. I had one in the loop for a while but my car stopped starting. Ended up that I didn't need the ballast. This is what I found out from another site. If you can get it to start with a ballast, it is just a matter of time before it will not work. At least that is how it worked for me. I had changed out the ballast a couple of times before just connecting both sides of it together. After they were connected, it fired right up with no problem and is still working great.

doesn't matter if its for a hot rod.. its all the same basics.

it comes down to two wires for the most part.

blue with yellow tracer goes to the key (run) side of the ballast.
black with yellow tracer goes to -coil.
green with red tracer is not used.

the others are obvious where they plug in. only way i can make it any easier for ya is to come install it myself...lol

Wow, both these links are very correct however, 10 gauge wire for the ignition and start circuits off the ignition switch????? Kind of heavy wire for the low current draw! on these circuits. My .02

those drawings better be correct. they were made right off my car when we rewired it..lol

and the 10 gauge wire is what was on the new switch wiring. the original switch may have had smaller wire but i figured they used 10 gauge on the new one for a reason so we went with that in the drawing.

yes, ill make you a cup of coffee if you make the trip.lol thanks joe. that is the answer i was looking for, as i cannot under stand that picture.lmao. i am illiterate to electrical drawins

lol.. you'll get it. once you do you'll look at the picture and it will just click..

just make sure the blue with yellow tracer wire goes to the right side of the ballast. pull both wires off the ballast and stick a test light in them. the one that lights when the key in in the run position is where you tie into. shame your not a little closer. i'd cruise over and walk ya through it.

ok the blue/yellow wire i tied into the blue wire off of original ballast, as the blue was the hot side. then i just plugged them both back in. this sound right? the brown wire to the ballast, i do not touch, correct?

Correct, do not touch the brown wire other than plugging it back into the ballast.

thanks guys. i got trans out right now, so i have no of firing up to make sure it is all good to go, but i think it is ready. appreciate the help

abody joe, do you still have that picture of how you wired yours? it has been too long and now does not show. i am now doing it to pinky, but forgot how to!.lol thanks. oh, btw, it worked perfectly the last time

to test fire the ignition...just remove distributor from engine and turn it by hand with the key on to see if the coil fire....remove coil wire from top of distributor cap and place near ground...

pretty simple..

this the one i had posted for ya?
