I've read Smallblock thread on track recommendations and I too have never raced but would like to have an idea of what I might run with my combination.
73 Satellite
Mild 440 pump gas, iron heads, single 4 barrel, headers into 2.5" exhaust
727 rebuilt with 2800 stall Coan converter
8 3/4 with 3.55 ring and pinion
255/60/15 Cooper Cobra radials

I'm turning 50 this year and would like to do it this summer

I am close to Muncie dragway in Indiana and to Tri-State at Hamilton Ohio, as well as Kil-Kare. Any thoughts on which facility might be more friendly and patient with a rookie?

Tri state is old and rough but really cool. Kil Kares track is amazing. Edgewater isn't bad at all either. I would say your times would be in the 13s just because of the weight but I don't know much about satallites or big blocks. Either way if you come into ohio deffinAtly send me a pm. I live twenty minutes from edgewater and tri state and about 45 minutes from kil kare. I'm not a professional racer by any means but I will do all I can to help out.

Also tri state has odd test and tune dates and hours. I usually just do test and tune at edgewater.

Muncie has good track prep most of the time, and very nice folks run it.

Without specific info, I would guess low 14's in the 1/4.

before you go,make sure your car can past tech,go on the track you want to go to,see if they have rules for tech,or go on nhra or ihra depending on which track you go to and see whats needed for you et you think your car will run, seat belt, helment ,battery hold down and radiator over flow is always a must, you can go up to the line and talk to the starter and tell that its your first time ,most racers will help you and we can help you how to stage and get down the track, when you do your burn out, never start off in 1st,but 2nd go directly to 3rd,and let it pull it self out, also do do burn out in water, pull into box and stop right outside of the water, after burn out go directly to the line, look at the racer in the other lane to see if there ready to stage or might be,they may try to double bulb you which means they went up and put both stage lights on,but don't let the other guy bug you ,every one does there burn out or stage different, some like to go in last or first, put the top bulb on,then inch into the second beam, when both drivers are stage the starter will thow the switch if you want to get up on the convertor a little that's ok but might wheel spin more depending on your tires and pressure, some tracks have a timer, that after you put on the top bulb you have 7 seconds to get into the 2nd stage bulb, talk to track people or racers, never be afraid to ask anyone,we all help each other, the track I race at,has no tech, and all the require is seat belts and helment and tech your car at home, and my track only run heads up pro tree index racing,we can help you in any way

If you have a shoulder strap for your seatbelt use it. When I just had a lap belt a guy started knocking on my window after i staged. I have been running my car at these tracks a couple years now so like I said, don't hesitate to send me a pm and let me know when your racing.

With those tires your not going fast thats for sure...those thing will spin all the way down the track they're "street tires"..get some sticky ones..

Get there early and study the layout of the track. Go to the shutdown area and check it out. How many turnouts? Which side? Are they well marked? What's at the very end? Fence? Sandtrap? Are there lights for night racing? If there is only one exit, its going to be about the same distance as the track is long. And that can take awhile if your putting along at 40. Ask another racer or a tech guy about protocol exiting the track. Usually one lane is given right of way if the two cars are anywhere near each other. Never make a U turn on the track. If you have a problem and need to stop on the return road, pull off the road so others can get by. Know where to pick up your timeslip. Pick up your slip and drive away! Others may be behind you.waiting and some may be getting hot. The cars that is. There is quite a bit more and every track has its peculiarities but always keep your eyes and ears open! The pits can be a hectic place! And have fun!

At edgewater there are a couple turn offs. I always go to the last and let the left hand turn first. Stay on the return road until you come to the time slip hut. If you go on test and tune then lanes 1-4 are for street tires I believe the rest are slicks. Lanes 12 and 13 are for lisence passes only.
