I found a 833-OD LOCAL woo hoo. It's from an 82 van but I'm not scared. I talked to the guy last night and I'm heading down tonight to pick it up. It's not everything I need for the conversion but it's really cheap. He says he's got 2 bellhousings with it one alum and one steel for a v8.
I'm thinking I'll sell the v8 bell and have enough to get the /6 bell if he doesn't have one. I'm stoked.
Anyone run a late 4-speed behind a /6?? is it all the fun I hope it will be?
Also I plan on putting in a hydraulic clutch master anyone have any info?
Also Also, I have a spare driveshaft, where would one look to have it shortened for the long tail 833?

I had a dart lite with the slant 4 speed od,and it was far from fun! With the stock gearing it seemed like I had to really wind up the engine in first so it wouldnt bog down when I shifted to second. Also be careful the legnth of the tailhousing, and shifter pad location. A bodies need the short tail version...which is the same one found in a and f bodies.

I put a long tail shaft A833OD behind a \6 that I had built up some. The gear spacing was not an issue going down the road. Certainly was not ideal for max acceleration but it worked good. I initially had 3.23 gears then when I swapped in the 8.25 rear end I rebuilt it with 3.55 gears.

The A833OD trannies have a larger input bearing retainer, if you can get the \6 A833OD bell housing grab it and you will need the clutch fork too. The vans and pick-ups used a ball pivot for the clutch fork that screwed into the bell housing so the car bracket won't work. The fork will be longer than the car fork but it will work. Otherwise you will be looking for parts and swaping or machining parts to get the bell housing to mate to the tranny.

Go to bigblockdart.com and they have a sketch of the bracket you will need to make for the shifter so it comes through the floor in the correct postion.

You will also need the slip yoke for the tranny. The A833OD will have one that is the same size as the 727. I got my drive shaft shortened at the local drivetrain shop they also had the correct slip yokes in stock.

Ok so the dude was late getting done from a job last night but I should be getting it tonight...we'll see.. :(
Grinder, Do you know what the rear gear was on your car? Mine should be a 2.76, so based on this:
http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/ODA833fourspeed1.htm
and this:
http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-speeds/applications/options.htm
3.09x2.76 would give me a 8.528 start-off ratio

From this article:
http://www.carcraft.com/newlook/crc_act/116_0302_trans/index1.html
I get 2.45 (first gear from a 904) x 2.76 ( rear gear ) gives me a 6.762 start-off ratio.

That would mean that the engine would have to turn almost 2 more times to get the wheels to spin the same distance in 1st after the swap to the 4-speed.

At this point I'm more worried about mileage for the daily driver. ( I have a turbo floating around for the speed upgrade later on)

This is definitely not a "buy it this week and install it this weekend" type thing. I have lots things to think about and gotchas to overcome. One being the tail length.

But for the price..(I'm not tellin' ;) ). I'll buy it and maybe trade it for a short tail later on while I'm looking for the rest of the puzzle pieces.

I've had the 'lite' 4-speed OD behind a /6 and 318; not great for 1st to 2nd but not as bad as everyone would lead you to believe. I averaged 24-27mpg with both engines-I'm rough on them tho-only got 100thou out of each engine.

oops, I forgot to update my thread.. Well I'm a few days from starting the swap.
I have managed to make the shifter adapter plate, hydraulic clutch setup and got the drive shaft shortened among other things but I've got the whole setup sitting on the floor waiting for the time off work. :) I got the pedal setup installed a couple of weeks back and had to get a new brake master cyl 'cause the old one was leaking into the car :( and don't get me started on the over-center spring (finger guillotine)

ok and now that I have the trans I'll tell you what I paid......$50 for the trans bell flywheel and shifter..

oh and one last thing...ATF or gear oil??
