Selling our 2 1968 Barracuda convertible:
#1 383 4 speed Formula S convertible
#2 340 4 speed Formula S convertible
Have a customer coming to look and has asked me to check for numbers matching and or period correct.
I know how to check on the 60s and 70s GM but not Mopar.
I'm helping an estate to sell these cars.

MAN, I hope they didn't mess with the grill adding those extra lights.
 
That was done about 40 years ago and who cares? Look at the rarity of a pair of Cuda's with almost identical twins. The difference is the one has a 340 and console.
He said that because thats a thousand dollars or more worth of grills. It does affect the value. Only the late build cars were stamped with the vin. They will be topside where the trans and block mate together if at all
 
These are four speed cars, so the engine number would be on the top of the bell & the transmission numbers would be on the passenger side of the case - if they were stamped, '68 was hit & miss.

I don't know why the 4 speed thing blew right over my head, I was thinking auto lol must be the time change
 
1968 cars do not have the VIN sequence number on the fender tags. The sequence numbers are the last 6 numbers in the VIN. Those numbers may or may not be stamped on the back of the block and bellhousing, but if they are. That is the numbers that you need to mach up with the VIN tag that is on the dash. The VIN is also stamped on the body in other locations as noted above.

How many grills you want. Have 4 parts cars. Does not affect the value of these cars at all. That is because of the rarity of the car. If it was a /6 car, may affect it at about 100.00.
Thanks for the info on the numbers. Have a set of grills to go with the car. 340 has no numbers and the 383 is a number match. Thanks for the help. Was not easy for a 600 lb guy to crawl up in the engine compartment.
 
I have only seen one 2 other 4 spd S verts besides my 69. Beauty cars and rare. Too bad they're red...lol
Anyone know prod #'s on 68's?? I know how low 69's are.

The engine numbers and letter is located back of the engine near the bell housing. As your standing in front of the car, it would be at the 12:00 position. Have to remove the oil sending unit to read. This is an engine number matches car vin. It has stamped (8B435180). The date of the block is on the driver side below the head.
It has stamped, 4-23-68. This car was special ordered in June of 1968. That makes it a late production car.The trans is from a 1972 car. The letter and numbers are stamped on a raised pad on the pass side of trans on a raised pad. It has the following, 2B256081.
It also has stamped, PP 635 3770 0391. Anybody know what this stands for?

Do you have build sheets for either car? usually found under the back seat. That will give you the sequence number which can be compared to the radiator support and trunk lip. Things got much easier in 1969 but in 1968 at least the high performance engines got the VIN otherwise everything is sequence numbers.
1968 manual transmissions should have the VIN as well on a raised pad on the passenger side.

For what it's worth, on my son '68 GTX built late june, it was the VON (Vehicule Order Number) that was stamped on the upper engine /bellhousing rim.
